Lyrics: In Bambridge town, in the County Down one mornin’ last July From a bóithrín green a sweet cailín and she smiled as she passed me by She looked so sweet from her two bare feet to the sheen of her nut-brown hair Such a coaxing elf, sure I shook myself for to see I was surely there From Bantry Bay to Derry Kay n’ from Galway to Dublin Town No maid I’ve seen like the brown cailín that I met in the County Down As she onward sped sure I shook my head and I looked with the feeling rare And I said, says I, to a passerby “Who’s the maid with the nut-brown hair?” He smiled me, and truth says he “That’s the gem of Ireland’s crown, young Rosie McCann, from the banks of the Bann she’s the Star of the County down!” From Bantry Bay to Derry Kay n’ from Galway to Dublin Town No maid I’ve seen like the brown cailín that I met in the County Down (Instrumental) In the stale of the by from the pale moon light with the veil like mist in the air I lie n’ dream of my sweet cailín of her smile and her long brown hair On bended knee, I would gladly be n’ pray that one day she’d be by By the sky up above, my undying love, shall be hearsed til’ the end of time From Bantry Bay Bay to Derry Kay n’ from Galway to Dublin Town No maid I’ve seen like the brown cailín that I met in the County Down At the Harvest fair, she’ll be surely there and I’ll dress in me Sunday clothes With me shoes shine bright and me hat cocked right for a smile from me nut-brown rose No pipe I’ll smoke, no horse I’ll yoke, til me plow turned a rust colored brown, til a smilin’ bride by me own fireside is the Star of the County down From Bantry Bay to Derry Kay n’ from Galway to Dublin Town No maid I’ve seen like the brown cailín that I met in the County Down (x2)

Hog eyed man is a derogetory term used to mock canal laborer or shallow water seamen, who use to masquerade around like deep water sailors to get women. They also sailed on shallow boats called hogs eyes. These men would offten be highly sexed and would frequently try and steel deep water sailor wifes wile they were at sea.

Lyrics Waterson:Carthy sing Hog-Eye Man Oh, hand me down my riding cane, I'm off to meet my darlin' Jane. Chorus (after each verse): And a hog-eye! Railroad navvy with his hog-eye, Steady on a jig with a hog-eye, oh, She wants the hog-eye man! Oh, the hog-eye man is the man for me, Sailin' down from o'er the sea. Oh, he came to the shack where Sally did dwell, He knocked on the door, he rung a bell. Oh, who's been here since I been gone, Railroad navvy with his sea-boots on. If I catch him here with Sally once more, I'll sling me hook, go to sea once more. Oh, Sally's in the garden sifting sand, Her hog-eye man sittin' hand in hand. Oh, Sally's in the garden, punchin' dough, The cheeks of her arse go chuff, chuff, chuff! Oh, I won't wear a hog-eye, damned if I do, Got jiggers in his feet and he can't wear shoes. Oh, the hog-eye man is the man for me, He is blind and he cannot see. Oh, a hog-eye ship and a hog-eye crew, A hog-eye mate and a skipper too.

Those ain't right, this version is different. It sounds something like "With a hog eye! Oh railroad navvy with a hog eye. Yo roll as sure with a hog eye yo. She wants a hog eye man"

The song is much better at 1.5X speed. It's a little slow otherwise for my taste.
@theunaccompaniedsenior12 күн бұрын
There's no accounting for taste. The objective reality is that some folks can't make out the lyrics at a more rapid tempo, so objectively, you're wrong. But you're still entitled to your bad taste.

I've also heard a hog eye refers to a flat bottomed river boat who just went between ports on a river so a hog eye man is a fake sailor.

The Old Dun Cow, recorded by Harry Champion, was written (words and music) by Harry Wincott (1867-1947), born in Lambeth, London, lived the later part of his life in Yeovil. So not very traditional, nor very Irish, eh?

THANK YOU: Great job! Most versions aren't as peppy and melodic as this one. The only other with a sound a little like this one is the X-Seamen in Heart of Oak, but I like your lyrics better. Will look for your performances in future! BTW folk, "hog eye" is often used to refer to the female apparatus -- according to the musico-historical boffins at Mudcat, although I think given the context of this song, it's debatable ;-)
