I'm pretty sure it doesn't make a difference one way or the other except for the extra effort but so far I've become so used to doing every move as is and all the extra stuff I shouldn't. I don't know what other effort I'd be making while shooting if I wasn't...
@PaperBrain26 күн бұрын
@@comiccaperproductions that’s great! If I could do everything in-camera, I would. 2 things that discourage me from this are 1) I’ve got shaky hands so precision is an issue for me and 2) I’m trying to make a decent hourly wage from my projects. I would encourage everyone to strengthen their post skills, even if they don’t use them often- it can help you defy gravity and accomplish things that you didn’t think you could do in stop-motion, and fix things without doing an entire reshoot. But I’d also say you should work how you love to work, and if you prefer doing everything in-camera, that’s what stop-motion is all about so do it!
@comiccaperproductions26 күн бұрын
@@PaperBrain I'll take that advice into consideration. I too have shaky hands and hedge from more ambitious shots because of doing it all in camera and to be fair it's not cause I want to, I just, I don't know I have a habit of overcomplicating things for myself instead of actually sitting down and learning to use my editing tools better
@PaperBrain26 күн бұрын
@@comiccaperproductions the more tools you have at your disposal, the more creative options you have and the more confident you can be in your abilities. And the more ambitious your productions can become. But I’d also say to pursue the part of the process that inspires you the most, because that’s what’s going to spark that flame of creative inspiration you need as fuel to put the massive amounts of time needed to make animations.

@paperchunk27 күн бұрын
@@PaperBrain If you want my opinion, I would suggest maybe how to do a PROPER chroma key in post editing software and how lighting should look from layer to layer. I know you've done some rig removal stuff already. You normally do 15fps, right?
@PaperBrain27 күн бұрын
@@paperchunk12 fps is my favorite nowadays. I used to prefer 15. For a commercial client, I usually do 24 fps unless I know they’re cool with lower frame rates. Sometimes I’ll split the difference at 20. And sure, I’ll definitely put a keying tutorial in the queue.

Nice setup! In order to avoid optical distortion I use a macro 50mm lens, e.g. the classic nikkor 55mm 2.8 micro. Macro lenses are "flat field", they are suitable for capturing two-dimensional surfaces like paintings and copy stuff in Repro Photography.

I use a photography copy stand I bought from a photo store, attached to a DSLR slider to I can easily reposition the camera, or do tracking shots (I mostly do live action with my puppets). I also put polarizing gels on my lights and a polarizing filter on my lens... if you twist the filter you can completely cut out the reflections on the glass, or on shiny things you're animating. I started using a light table with a green or blue gel on it for my chroma keying, no cast shadows, it gives a bit of light wrap though so it's only useful in certain situations. Keying paper puppets is really easy, when I'm using green paper I don't even bother to light the greenscreen. I also just bought a robotic arm to do my animation for me!
@PaperBrainАй бұрын
That sounds like a rad setup! I’ve got a light table that I use for product shots, but I’ve never used a green gel for chroma keying. I thought about trying that, but couldn’t find the right color green gel to cover it. Would love to know where you get yours!
