Fantastic conversation, love the great history, perspective, and values here. Only thing that didn't sit right was when Dave said (1:20:30) "now women going into academia don't even think about it" regarding sexism in academia. Based on the experiences of my female friends in academia, I think they would disagree with that. It's better, for sure, but still not great.

I love the transparency of this idea not being how we are gonna feed our cities, but rather something with so many ecological and community benefits. The benefits of growing food far outweigh the calories grown, whether its on roofs in an urban environment or in a backyard or on a small farm. There is a measurable environmental benefit of growing naturally with the focus of biodiversity in both vegetation and wildlife supported by that vegetation. And the community benefit of these kinds of models focused on feeding those in need or internally within the client company you are truly bringing awareness to what food is MEANT to be. Farming is not just producing food, it is the backbone of our existence, civilization did not start until there were farmers. We build communities, we uplift the towns we reside in, and we provide for our neighbors. Also yes shout out to Farm to People! I worked in the hudson valley for 2 years and it was awesome working with them!

I didn't think I can link it, but will try in a separate comment. However, take a screenshot of the video, then open that image in Google photos and use the lens function to search for it. That comes in really handy. Edit: yep, the link was deleted. But it's at a place called Adornjanesville dot you know the rest, lol.

Hi- I'm in Houston. Our cool weather starts in Late October and ends in late April. Freezes are super light and rare. What would be best for us . . . . . Summer or Winter leeks? I like the idea of cold hardiness, but I also assume that the Winter varieties probably don't like our hot days. We have some hot days all the way to December and then we have some hot days also in February and March. What do you think? Thanks.

I love the fact that Pete’s mum knew Bill Mollison. So many brilliant touch points with my journey and experience from the late 70’s in Sydney through the roller coaster ride that beset grass roots food systems in Australia. Great interview JM 😍

Every urban dweller that is exposed to your soil first urban farm modules/systems will be influenced by its ecological nature (as it does). That can only trickle down to increasing awareness of the benefits of ‘fresh, nutrient dense’, farmers markets, famgates and CSA. I strongly believe the more the merrier in our small organic production for profit and I watch this develop in real time in my own states communities. Thanks for your complimentary vision and story Orlane

Our kind are not allowed here in Dutchess County NY. My Veteran partner and I were thrown off of our Farmland and all others are allowed to farm and sell off of it. I hate my race and wish I was never born my color. Joe The Grower

we have several project like this in europe: create greenhouse on roof. All the ones we checked are money grab plot by people stealing public money for their private interest. So i am very very very cautious near those "green" project. A the end they do 5% of their income in agriculture and the rest is seminar, green visits of the museum farm for the city dwellers etc... all created by public money and all is owned by private being now, profit are private, cost is public.

this might sound ridiculous but to be honest with you the way that you were going to attract people to the floral industry is with sent it's in our nature to gravitate towards things that bring us pleasure and our senses deliver that but if you have flowers that were genetically modified in order for them to have a longer lifespan though they might be beautiful they are incomplete I worked in a grocery store in the floral department and when I first arrived there none of the flowers had any smell except for the occasional potted plant that came through that you could smell within 20 feet of that department it brought people to the department people didn't normally look at the flowers or even know that they were there because they were so busy running through the store getting the things that they needed it wasn't calling their attention so no matter how beautiful the flowers are without their signature which is scent they're not that precious You've heard the saying take time to stop And smell The roses It didn't say take time to stop and look at the roses There's a reason And ask people we know that love is very important To fall in love with everything and how can you fall in love with something just because it's pretty you're falling in love with the essence of that thing whether it be a flower a plant a human and animal a tree water the rocks You understand? Life is love all things that are living but has a special essence it is their soul expression My recommendation is not to worry about productivity and chasing the money but to develop a business that encompasses all of those things it should be for the love of So when you purchase your flowers or your seeds make sure that they are heirloom or organic That they have not been genetically modified and that they contain all of their special characteristics including their precious essential oils which are released drawing your audience near I have to tell you I adore him he is perfect Someone who allows himself to be emotional and to feel his feelings and that comes through on his interview and it's really beautiful very refreshing That's what makes him so special and we all have that so do the flowers let's not forget

I'm curious whether there is any calculation for additional "days to maturity" in the shoulder seasons? It's been a real issue that I've run into planting in the late winter and finding things not growing as quickly getting started. Light? Heat? Day length? Soil temperatures? It's a big can of worms, I know, but I think important to deal with if one is trying to plan for, for instance, having product to sell at the market on the first weekend of May.

Loss of Biodiversity is part of Global Warming. And Global Warming is the biggest problem. If you don’t believe just come down to Puerto Rico and talk to small farmers like me. The effects of it can be seen all over the Islands already and the hurracaine seasson hasn’t started yet. The Atlantic ocean temperature is so high like never before. They are specting around 26 hurracaines this seasson when the norm is 14. Greetings from Utuado Puerto Rico. Thanks for such great podcast. We needed this kind content!!

Great marketing strategies- however the proof is still in the pudding. I talk to growers at market and much of what they call organic is not the way I think of real organic I.e. the real organic project, no dig no till regenerative healthy sustainable growing. It is cool to disrupt the food system with Ooooby. However, I'm in NSW Australia and if I bought all my food from Oooby Sydney I'd need a household with two x six figure incomes. So, it's not food equity if you're paying $8 (4 pound Sterling) for an organic avocado etc. If I'm paying premium dollar, I would want The Real Organic Project Label and a really great product. The growers I meet and talk to really just grow in pretty nutrientless soil, constant tilling, and often without compost. A revolution starts with honesty and fairness and there are great opportunities here for growers to abuse access to market that may create smoke screens between growers and consumers who think they are getting better quality than they really are for premium price point. Without a Real Organic Project Label guarantee of what your purchasing, it's still buyer beware. And that's the elephant in the software.

Thanks for this wonderful podcast! I'm very involved in the Food Policy Network, so a lot of topics mentioned are very important I think. And I don't know if it was in this episode or another one, but sometimes it is just so important to hear that we are not alone in our work. It can be a bit lonely, I certainly had to leave friends behind who didn't understand my journey. So thanks for letting me feel connected again! ❤
