I served from the age of fifty-four, through sixty. Being an elder in Namibia was an advantage. Most of my colleagues were fine. I felt that I needed to ‘prove myself’ to middle-aged males. I LOVED THE WHOLE CONCEPT of this society from the first time I heard about it, either in 98 or up to 2003...somewhere around in there. I'm stuck in a position that prevents me from joining right now, but the moment I get unstuck, I'm hoping to join a chapter near me. The thing that kind of blows my mind is that this society only started/became official in 1998. I really thought it had been around much longer than that, regardless of "when it started" I am so glad they did start it and that it has spread as far as it has!!!!!

As a 71-year-old woman who has been in the Red Hat Society since I turned 50 and started my own chapter, I'm sort of disappointed at this interview and the way that the two women presented it. It was a pretty dull interview and did not do us justice. They talked about us having fun but they gave no real examples of that, and showed no videos of some of the seriously goofy things we do. They made it look like all we do is wear red hats and purple clothes and go to lunch and tell people that we have fun. What type of things we do and how we dress, are wholly determined by the personality of the "Queen" (The woman who starts the chapter), and what HER idea of fun is. Then SHE makes it her goal to recruit like-minded women and Ford of mouth before your chapter takes off from there as they tell their friends how much fun they're having. We play goofy, silly games, and have theme events where we dress up stranger and more gawdy and than usual, LOL and we all try to outdo ourselves in trying to make each other laugh by how we dress and the games we play. purpose of every get together is to generate fun and laughter, we have theme nights, I put on an "Estrogen Olympics, event one time and we played Jack's hopscotch,

I looked forward to joining since I was a girl watching my Aunts get gussied up and going out! It made me PROUD to turn 50!! At 55 I started my own chapter, we are 2 months old, but the response has been great!! I’m truly blessed to have these ladies in my life!!!

You should not look at only who you lay off, but who you hire. If you are laying off average of 45 and hiring an average of 30, it is bias. Should only be about 5-7 year difference.

Social discrimination based on age is also quite common, while legal, it's just as wrong.

The argument towards the end where the guy is saying to whit "....they may hire the person with a lower salary expectation who is also qualified....and that's not age discrimination, that's economics..." I call bullsh*t. The ONLY way you could say it's not age discrimination is if that other person is the same age. The longer one is in a position, generally the more money that person makes, and they tend to age up during that time. Then for some reason they wind up looking for a similar job then hell yes, they are going to expect a similar salary. Unfortunately there IS a point of diminishing returns. Does 30 years of experience count for more than 15? Not in most cases. A company would rather hire a 40 year old with 15 years of experience than a 55 year old with 30. That whole notion that it's money? No, not entirely. Corporations would rather hire that 40 year old at $100K than the 55 year old for $85k. Young people start out in the work force EXPECTING to be paid as much as someone with years of experience. Why is that? Why do some people have to change jobs to get anywhere close to a decent raise because the longer you're with one company the less your salary is worth? Why do companies offer 'raises' that are no where near cost of living increases? Why do most companies have a 'standard' annual increase of no more than 3%, but there's no guarantee you would get that entire 3%? Sure...companies will hire the cheaper labor that offers the same ROI based on how they measure. That doesn't change the fact that older employees are and will continue to be reduced to an income level that was't expected, and for which they have little to no recovery.

This video is inspiring even though I'm just in my mid-40s. I have applied for the Peace Corps to go next year, and if all goes well, I'd love to do it again when I am officially an "older adult". One aspect that has changed since this video was made is that applicants are now able to indicate which regions or countries they prefer to serve in, and they can choose regions they want to be excluded from (for whatever reason, e.g., safety, opportunities to travel, proximity to friends or family, or just because they want an experience in a country they've never live in). Wait...being terminated because they're no longer "a fit" with new management? What?? What if the employee has been doing the job for 9 YEARS?? Unfortunately the biggest way employers are able to find your age is right on the Internet. With bogus website such as Spokeo and intellus. Not only do they give your age they also like to list your address for previous addresses . I think people need to start going after them for invasion of privacy. These websites are causing many people not to even be looked at by potential employers I know myself I have contacted these websites and told them please take my information off of your site.

Ageism is rampant in the USA and the world. I have been hired, then, "let go" based on my age. People shun others who are over 40 personally, professionally, many many times, I have refused to tell others my age because of this. I speak 4 languages, I served in the US Air Force, 100 % healthy, very tech savvy, work out every day.........unemployed for 2 years. :(
