The Kate Kelly book by Rebecca Wilson, although claimed to be the true story, is a load of fictitious rubbish. Poorly written and researched.

I've only just started doing my family tree last week and I've already found my first convict ancestor. He was put aboard the 1814-1815 fleet as a 14 year old. He's my dad's maternal grandmother's paternal grandfather

Wow, what a start to his life. 14 is so, so young to be sent to the other side of the world, let alone serve to out your sentence there. Along with probably never seeing ''home" again. But obviously he was tough, and made it through, and as a result your family is here. Welcome to the wonderful world of family history. You will find many amazing stories along the way.

@@GouldAu I haven't been able to peace it together properly yet but it seems he returned to England despite a supposed life sentence. Guess he got his sentence dropped. He then married a Scottish woman and moved back to Australia. This could be a different person at this stage. Gotta do more digging.

I agree, there are lots of amazing stories in this book. And you can just pick it up and read one now and then. It doesn't have to be a cover to cover read. But it is certainly a great record of the early homicides in the colony.

So true about supplying ''too much information'' to family members !

Yes, I've seen it happen. Too much FH info and their eyes glaze over, and lose interest. I find small tid-bits works better.

Good to know there's somebody else dealing wiith this type of subject besides those ''Ancestry'' people in the US who seem to have acquired just about everything in the ancestry business including the acquisition of old telephone books, electoral rolls, etc..... even here in Australia !
@GouldAu

Ancestry is certainly useful as far as records go , as are numerous other sites, but we are a little different in that we are a retail genealogy store, selling products to help you with your genealogy. We're just a small family business that's been around for 40+ years. You can check out of website of over 8000 items at www.gould.com.au.

Yes, it would be going back to 4x great grandparents if you start from yourself in the middle.

@@GouldAu Most people I’ve ever heard when people count generations they don’t count themselves they count their parents as one generation and then they Count from there.
@GouldAu
@GouldAu 2 жыл бұрын
Jason, when you fill in a pedigree chart the starting person (be it yourself or whoever you choose) is always Gen 1, and you count back from there. The same goes with these charts.

Be great with out that racket in the back ground. Was this filmed in a pub.
@GouldAu
@GouldAu 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching though, and for the feedback. Sorry about the background noise. It was filmed at out shop, and while we try to do it when things are quiet, it doesn't always work out that way. So we'll be more mindful of the background noise in future.
