Homie said "gnarly" like anyone has used that word since the 80's. I've live in LA since the 90's. NOBODY says "gnarly".

First of all we never say CALI! Some of these terms are from the 80,s/ 90,s. Words that are expired or only used by poseurs or tourists. Like, we don't have an accent!

Dank is bad, and when you bonk it's been called Wipeout since 1962. Dope is new Yorker. Lit means wasted on drugs. Right on speaks for itself. Yeah no means no.

I am aware this is to sleep too, but would be super helpful if the thai script was alot larger. Most English speakers would only need the phonetics small as easy to read. Thanks for the video ❤

I’m 32 grew up in OC. Probably similar age to this chap, the nostalgia I’m getting for high school ATM is wild. I don’t hear this slang as often these days just given the circles I’m typically in. I feel like I fkin know this dude… not because I actually do tho…. Gnarly

Nostalgia hits hard! The slang has definitely evolved over the years, but it's always cool to see how it's still connected to California culture.

My analysis, this is Orange County surfer lingo. CA being as diverse as it is… a lot of folks around here wouldn’t use these words in such ways. Say for example your abuelita in Santa Ana, or your Unc in south central MAYYY not say, “The waves were dank today, except when Kyle got freakin shacked man… gnarly.”. But hey, I’m not trying to generalize or make it racial, but I kinda did sorry.
@inspireacademyonline2298
@inspireacademyonline2298 Ай бұрын
You nailed it! SoCal slang definitely has roots in surfer culture, but as you pointed out, California is incredibly diverse. The slang varies a lot depending on where you are, but it's all part of what makes the state so unique!

This is more SoCal than up north. In the Bay Area you don’t really hear people say “Cali” much. They are usually out-of-state people trying to sound with-it and cool. In fact, I’d say most natives and locals here find it somewhat annoying.
@inspireacademyonline2298

So cal here. Noone says pen/car dude. Hectic is not used for a good meal, it’s almost exclusively used for crazy/gnarly. Also don’t use carne asah dude. The rest of this is pretty spot on. In Laguna Beach we add in “Manly” which can be used for a lot of things. It can mean manly, but it can also be like - someone made an embarrassing attempt at something - that was sooo manly. Kind of like cool, even if the thing was ironically cool
@inspireacademyonline2298
@inspireacademyonline2298 Ай бұрын
Great insight! Yeah, SoCal slang can be super specific to different beach towns. ‘Manly’ is a new one for us, and it sounds like Laguna has its own unique twist!

Most so cal folks imitate the Latino swang and tawng. It's sounds like they have a Spanish speaking background but they don't. The english-Spanish speaking accent is so prevalent that most people imitate it subconsciousnely

Good point! The blending of English and Spanish influences is definitely a big part of SoCal culture, and it’s interesting how it naturally becomes part of the accent and slang.

I wish the transliteration included tone marks for those who cannot read Thai script. Without them, the transliteration lacks value since it doesn't convey the tones.

Yeah your general California accent is down toned or maybe downplayed over time. We are the swing state between democracy and Republic and the accents are exemplary of this polarity. I guess what I'm trying to say is that the southern mixed elegantly with the northern accent and maybe that's played out in the surfer maybe it isn't maybe that's debatable. My family you know I respect their typical accent and it still plays out and be sometimes even for fun. ❤❤❤
@inspireacademyonline2298

As kids we began every sentence with, 'Hey man,'. Very early 60's excitement was 'twitchen'. Then advanced put downs were specified by, 'chop you low'. Then to teen years of cigarettes at the beach -more serious concerns like zits, 'Hey man, you got this Moby Zit in the middle of your forehead'. But hey it was 'casual'.

@@inspireacademyonline2298 Cali gets alot of hate online. 99% of those people would move here in a heartbeat if someone gifted them a home here. There’s a reason people pay $1 million for an average home here in a town (not even in the metros). We have every climate/terrain possible and the strongest economy with the most fertile agriculture. Doesnt get much better. Same way people hate on America (mostly Gen Z) when theyve never been to any developing or 3rd world country (except the resort). Just a bunch of clueless dummies.

I will never leave this beautiful state. 🌴 I grew up near the coast my whole life and still wear flip 🩴 flops every day. 🌴 "Gnarly" was a term used in the 70's, at least with my surfer friends, to describe a "radical" or not so smooth surf session. 🌊🏄‍♂️ Our phrase "for sure" has been replaced with "absolutely!" 😮 I'm not a fan of the latter. "Pure nectar" was said to describe a pretty female; typically one who sported a bikini 🏖 👙while walking along the Pacific Coast 🐬 alone. Beautiful, yet untouchable. Her beauty was something to be appreciated. ❤

I have spent the vast majority of my 60 plus years living in either NorCal or SoCal (note these terms, we use them). This dude is attempting to channel a SoCal surfer and much of the lingo he is using is SoCal surfer/doper lingo. Even though i grew up within 10 miles of the iconic SoCal beaches, I was not a surfer/doper and we didn’t use much of this lingo. One could identify a surfer by those words. “Dude” is very SoCal and not limited to surfers. Also, in reality one should also include a conjugation of the pseudoverb “fuck” after about every 4th word (for real), as in “Fuck dude, let me fuckin’ in, I gotta take a fuckin’ shit.” Watch the ‘80’s movie “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure” for practical examples of the application of what surfer boy here is saying and then know if you walk around SoCal talking like that you will (1), get your ass kicked and (2), be laughed out of the room, even by the surfers and dopers. It’s like faking an Aussie accent - most who try to simulate one do so very poorly.

You’ve got some great observations! SoCal slang is definitely distinct, especially among surfers. And yes, ‘dude’ transcends all boundaries in California!
