It's difficult to assess who to believe. There are great scholars who are committed Christians. So, are they deluded? No. This one is too dry, too extreme.

I believe that the religious cults or communities last the longest and have the most effect on the people even though they’re false is because they’re the closest to the correct way of life. Atheists,Secularism and everything else comes and goes I believe because the people who practice them know deep down within themselves that that belief system is a fraud

Isn't time itself a paradox it only exists because humans invented it it is nothing more than a device to metre our lives and maintain the continuity of memory. One can sit on a chair all day and watch excuse the pun the cogs and hands of a clock going round whilst observing this phenomenon the passage of time seems to move more quickly or slowly depending on the mood and observations of the individual, so is the the wall clock really demonstrating the so called flow of time or is it in fact the human component?. Regards 😊

Yea. Back on this one. The sun rise and the sun set. That is our 24 hour construct. I suppose there is the hour and the minute etc but kind of like our daily ruler. Just notches on a stick. Oh the other person I wanted to research before I started more input is Helen Caldicott. You know the one. Talking about Plutonium. Very cogent discussion. She notes as Seven Minutes To Midnight. Oh yea. Now there is a very important view of TIME. All subjective. There is no AD or BCE or AC (after Christ?). or BC. There is only a Calendar. A Calendar is the only real way to mark time. One may say 12 months. OK I get that but what if in a subjective way, the Human Race decides to make a Calendar of Events that is say 12 ~ One Thousand Year. ~ periods of time. ???? What then. So lets say that each "month" as we know it ~On this other "Calendar" is one thousand years long.??? What then? Just imagine. Then of course there is the Moon and what a "fortnight" means. Or the Seasons. Ya know Summer, Spring, Winter, Fall. Those are celestial. I guess. The Earth on it's axis. Can not avoid the snow in the winter and the heat in the summer. Oh well. 😉

Kept waiting and waiting for some discussion of the perception of the individual. There is subjective versus objective. Time is subjective. Time is a collective construct but ultimately depends on the perception of the individual. The primary drive for everyone's life is the sun rise and the sun set. Very Very Very simple. That's it. Period. All of this discussion is irrelevant. By the way for me, i exist in the world of Eastern Standard Time. Subjective and simple. 😳

Grayling is such a calm but persistent humanitarian thinker. The humor he throws in helps. He’s kind of a “four horsemen” but his atheism is less,strident than, say, C. Hitchens or Dawkins. Also he leans on science less heavily than Sam Harris but finds wisdom in philosophers through the ages.

How does one argue against the notion that a person would still have an "evolutionary / genetic interest" in showing solidarity toward people who share more of their genes at the expense of people who are further away from them?
@NanakiRowan
@NanakiRowan 7 күн бұрын
It wouldn't make sense from an evolutionary point because besides a few arbitrary physical traits, one cannot *see* genes. In-group preference is more about culture (for example, the people who you've been raised around) than anything else. In fact, there is evidence *against* in-group preference simply being solidarity of people who "share more of their genes", as research has shown that humans unconsciously seek out and are attracted to people who are genetically *less* similar to them. Evolution and Mother Nature are amazing in their ability to perpetuate genetic diversity needed to perpetuate our species. Racism is quite literally against nature.
@LS-xs7sg
@LS-xs7sg 7 күн бұрын
@@NanakiRowan Can you send me a link to the article about people seeking out people different to themselves? The stuff I have seen associates this with 'fast life history strategy' vs 'slow life history' with 'fast life history' people being more inclined to seek out genetic diversity. As for not being able to 'see genes' - surely your second point contradicts your first point. If people subconsciously recognise genetic distance for the purposes of mating then there is no reason why they cannot subconsciously recognise genetic distance for the purpose of establishing tribal borders and driving away competitors.
@NanakiRowan
@NanakiRowan 7 күн бұрын
@@LS-xs7sg Gah, looks like my reply was autodeleted. I'll try again. Is the "stuff" you're referring to about "fast life history" from Rushton by any chance? Anyway, there was no contradiction in any of my points. My point was that evidence shows that people seek out and are attracted to those who's genetics differ from theirs. This does *not* support any idea that people repel those who's genetics differ from theirs. It shows the opposite. Even a simple look at human history shows that solidarity or divisiveness is primarily based on cultural factors such as religion/beliefs, language, land, etc. Anyway, you can check out the Wikipedia article entitled "Major histocompatibility complex" and scroll down to "in sexual mate selection". Then you can read "Interpersonal compatibility" and scroll down to the same. Evolution and Mother Nature are unironically anti-racist.

Definitely one of my favourite popularisers of science and I agree that the interdependence of space and time is where the real interest in relativity lies. It's also interesting that he addresses the experience of the immediate moment and the 'flow of time', as this is rare for a physicist. All the same, a lot more can and has been said on the subject, and a good reading of Bergson, James and/or Husserl would help to articulate the issue better.

People should be able to send their children to Faith schools and Independence schools. I went to an independent RC Faith school and I was very happy there. We live in a free country and people should have the right to choose what kind of education they want for their children. What you are saying is disgusting. You’re just pushing your views and options with no respect for other people’s beliefs, communities and cultures. Children should have the right to be educated and understand the importance of their own religion and their own culture. But still respect other people’s beliefs and cultures in different communities.

All of physical reality/existence is always, only, and exactly Now (Now has no duration). All of physical reality is 'simply' the current continuum state of all forces (energy if you like) flowing from Now causing the next Now. We perceive time because 1) physical reality is changing, and 2) we have memory storing previous states, and 3) our brain compares now to stored memory. No memory a/o no change = no perception of time. The universe is just running/flowing. Enjoy the ride.

actually the speed of light is Incredibly slow on the astronomical scale. It takes 40 billion years....... for a light beam, to travel from the east coast to the Westcoast of the US, if the size is scaled down to the size of America, where our sun is as small as a grain of dust, fitting between the lines of our fingerprints.

I move a magnet and pick up a paper clip at one location and continue the movement to a new location and pick up a second paperclip. If the laws of physics play equally backwards as forwards. I would expect that moving the magnet backwards from its end position, it would drop both paperclips at the same time. What am I missing

Of all the weaknesses of the "tree of human life" beginning at 5:27 that Prof. Rutherford discusses, he fails to point out the most obvious one - that diagram depicts ONLY males are involved in human evolution. I guess females are not important for our species...?

In GPS systems the satellites emit a time signal and your device, phone or whatever does the number crunching. The satellites clocks are already set to match the time on land despite them actually aging slower by about 7 nano seconds a day. This is how they address Special Relativity. However on the land the gravity is a bit stronger and so time passes slower than the satellites making gravity a factor, by about 45 nano seconds, addressed in General Relativity. By Subtracting the 7 from 45 as part of the location calculations from the satellites, your device can show you where you are. You have to be there, it's relative to you at that moment in SpaceTime. Nobody else will get the same result. If your device shares the result that's another story.
