Well I will be saying goodbye to my good boy Hermes because he can’t function like a rat anymore and I need to give him happiness and take away the pain. Thank you for helping me get through this

I'm a career neuroscientist who studies pain for a living. I really appreciate this video and the intentions and agree with all your reasoning. Indeed, I euthanize animals for my friends and neighbors. However, carbon dioxide (CO2) is not a humane method of euthanasia, it's painful. CO2 drives air hunger, the urgency to breathe when you are holding your breath. People prefer pain over air hunger. CO2 = carbonic acid. Burp a soda ever through your nose? It hurts. Try to take a breath in through your nose - you won't be able to, it activates pain sensors. Try to take a breath in through your mouth (which most small rodents cannot do and you will immediately have a huge sense of fear and anxiety. It is used in the labs because it is cheap and safe for the lab people. Argon is not good either, it's again just a cheap gas (used for welding). I agree with you - pre-anesthesia with isoflurane is also a a bit hard on them; I have used it for survival surgery for decades, and it is used routinely on people too, but people can understand what's going on. Carbon monoxide from car exhaust is good, and displaces oxygen without increasing CO2. It is considered dangerous in a lab setting. The best method for you is to use HELIUM. Every creature (including humans) will just go to sleep as the oxygen is deprived. The CO2 is also deprived, so no air hunger. It is really fast as well, you just have to leave the creature in there for long enough for the heart to stop. Helium is expensive now because we are literally running out of it. NOTE: DO NOT USE BALLOON HELIUM AS IT IS NOT PURE. You can get it t a welding supply place. The second best method is a quick intraperitoneal injection of sodium pentobarbital. You do not have access to that, and it takes some skill. Ironically I tried to do a study on this topic, comparing the stress and vocalizations of rats being euthanized by many methods, and it was ---- wait for it --- denied for ethical concerns. If you contact me directly I can provide you with a long list of references. For instance, and this one should do it for you, it will download: www.mdpi.com/2076-2615/6/9/50/pdf Here's a direct quote: "This evidence indicates that CO2 and agents used to induce anoxia cannot be considered humanemethods of euthanasia for rodents, so developing replacements for these agents is an essential goal." Again I really appreciate your posting this and your efforts to a "good death" for all the little creatures.

Thank you. My dear mouse Floor is now sleeping forever❤ she had two tumors on her. I was so selfish for keeping her alive so long like a month. It was just so hard to let her go, our local vets use needles to kill small animals and the breeders who use gas are far away. Im glad i could do this at home where Floor feels safe. I spend like one hour just petting her and i think she knew that it was time, she was very calm and fell a sleep in the container before i even started. Rest in peace❤

Thank you for this video. My cat caught and brought in a shrew. It had a puncture in his abdomen and his kidney and intestines were hanging out but he was still alive. This video helped me find a humane way to end his suffering from a fatal injury from my cat.

Thank you for this video! This is the only one I could find for this exact way of doing this with baking soda and vinegar. We used this to put down our 3 fancy rats. I am a single mother and we don't have the money for expensive vet bills. We had one rat in breathing distress, one with a tumor the size of a lemon and we sent the 3rd with her sisters to the other side. It was SO hard to make that decision, but she would have been so lonely without them. They came into the world together and were lucky enough to be able to leave together. Thank you for being an amazing human.

IT IS SUPER IMPORTANT TO POUR SLOWLY. it should take you 1 minute to pour the 1st half of the vinegar into the baking soda. this will anesthetize the animal and will ensure that the animal is not feeling pain. pouring in too much or too fast may cause a burning sensation or discomfort. for the next stage, pour the rest of the vinegar into the mixture. this will cause the animal to rest eternally.

Euthanasia by co2 is a horrible way to go. If uve ever burped after drinking soda that's what it feels like with every breath. It will leave u gasping for breath
@Genni48625 ай бұрын
What a terrible example. If you would've just watched the video, you'd see that there's an anesthetic effect that happens. I've looked into this method before watching the video, and it is recommended BY VETS if you have to euthanize at home. Death is not pretty. Death does not come easily. Ask any hospice nurse- it's not a painless, beautiful event. The point of putting an animal down is to find the LEAST painful method to stop their pain. Sometimes, that does involve some suffering. But as said many times, this method is vet approved. If you'd ever had to watch your pet be in pain, succumb to a fast growing tumor- struggle to eat and breath- you'd understand why people have to do this. Show some compassion, you Neanderthal

I did everything that was required in the video but it didn’t help to put my rat even to sleep, I repeated the process twice, but I couldn’t find any information on SPECIFICALLY what type of vinegar to use, so I used the cleaning kind, I also have distilled white vinegar (could that work better??) I’m still in a very urgent situation, if anyone at all could reply quickly I would really appreciate it

I had to try this last night because I could see how much my pet rat was struggling and knew she couldn't be happy anymore. I don't know how I feel now. I know that what's done at the vet cannot be any better and sounds pretty unpleasant. I feel better than I would if I'd let her suffer from not having the vet money, but I also feel it took a bit longer for her to settle than I liked. There was a tiny bit where she very clearly wanted out of the container and it broke my heart. I don't know if that had anything to do with distress or knowing what was happening since I think any of my rats would start trying to get out of an enclosed space even though I tried to make it cozy. Once she was laying down and calm it seemed peaceful enough but still made me start feeling like what if her last memory was me killing her. I'm glad i know the method so that if I ended up in a similar emergency I would have a possible plan, but it was harder having an active role that I don't see at the vet. Either way my hearts a little broken today.

Thank you for this video. I currently have a 20.5 year old leopard gecko that is no longer eating. I’ve been trying to encourage her to eat but so far I’ve gotten nowhere with that. So I was looking for options for if she continues to decline. I do wish I had found this video 2 years ago when shortly after I relocated to a different state my old ferret had stopped responding to her medications and no vet around were excepting new patients - I even told them I had just moved here and could get them in contact with my regular veterinarian. I called vets in a large radius from me and was so upset that no one was willing to help.

I know there’s so many of these comments, but truly, thank you.. my rat was 3 years, one month, and he has not been well for a few months now. Not suffering.. but just old, slightly struggling. I thought the day would come on it’s own, but it hadn’t. He is lame, he has cataracts in one eye, he can no longer clean himself, and as of a month ago, started to develop a tumor. Today I noticed one beginning to appear on his cheek/face. I know this was the right decision for him, and seeing a video demonstration helped me so much, rather than the giant blog I had considered months ago. Squeezing the bag, knowing what was happening, just about broke my heart, but I couldn’t bare to see him suffer any longer. I played soft, nice music, put a dark towel over the container, and gave him some paper towel to lay on. I’m waiting for the 30 minute mark now.. I’m sad and scared to say my official goodbyes, but I know this was the right choice. Thank you. Thank you so much.
@autemiller996510 ай бұрын
It went perfectly. After the 20 minute mark, I had decided to do a second round to be absolutely sure. I made sure to put a kink in the tube and remove the bag properly, then added the second bag, secured it with duct tape, and undid the kink. I then started the process one more time, and waited for a total of 50 minutes since the first bag. It allowed me to give my old boy a proper goodbye in the comfort of my own home, and let him finally be at rest. This was much less painful and heartbreaking than finding him, and saying my goodbyes to him while he is cold, or stiff. I know that’s grim, but it’s the reality of 3 of my previous rats. A controlled, comfortable, warm goodbye, to my friend of so long. Thank you. I can’t say this enough.

Thank you for showing people a safe and comfortable way to help our pet rats pass on humanely . Believe me I can't believe I'm looking at this but if you love your pet rat and he is going to pass on it's better to help him and not let him be in pain. Thank you for posting this video. My 8 1/2 yr old ferret was extremely sick. I knew he was gonna go anytime. I was hoping he would pass in his sleep or a more peaceful way. He was extremely skinny, you could see every rib bone, his hip bones, and his spine. He also lost all his fur. He had cancer, He had these awful stools that looked like molasses which is a sign of cancer. Taking him to the vet, there was not much they could do for him, especially at his age. Today he was sleeping and then all of a sudden he started barking. I ran over to his bed thinking, this is finally it, he should pass soon. He has never barked before. At first, I thought he was having a seizure but he wasn't after about 5 minutes of him laying on his side heavily breathing, his heart was racing and his jaw was clinched so tight. I noticed he was biting his blanket so hard, I had to cut the blanket from his teeth. I thought to myself, that it might take an hour for him to fully pass 2 hrs went by, and then 3 hours went by. He was still doing the same thing lying on a side, barking and kicking his back legs. He was kicking his back leg so much, he was scratching his underbelly, to the point it was starting to bleed. Somehow I came across your video off the internet. I know in the video, it says not to do it with animals over 2 pounds, but he didn't even weigh a 1/2 a pound. He's always been a tiny ferret and he's lost so much weight because of the cancer. This method truly worked and I put him inside a giant tupperware. I used 6 cups of vinegar and a lot more baking soda. I did it 2 different times, to make sure it took. Within a minute he stopped kicking, he stopped barking, his breathing slowed and he just closed his eyes and went to sleep. Compared to what he went through beforehand, this method was the most humane thing I could have done for him. I couldn't get him euthanized, I don't have a car and the vets were all closed. Plus they would probably charge me 200.00 minimum. I've had other animals euthanized in the past but they were large dogs, cats, and a rabbit. I already had everything I needed at home but the vinegar because I just recently ran out. I cannot believe vets are charging people to euthanize their small pets when they could do this at home and it works within minutes. When I had my other animals euthanized they have to give them a pill to make them all loopy and tired before they Euthanize the pet, so it takes a minute. This was so much faster. No one wants to sit there and see their animals suffer for hours on end because they can't afford to euthanize them or they can't get to a vet. I used a bag probably 5 times bigger than hers and I put him in a clear container like the big one she has in the video. The hose I used was also a lot smaller. I made sure and taped around the container and each end of the hose. I know I didn't have a perfect seal but it still worked.

Mammals are extremely sensitive to carbon dioxide. This is most certainly NOT painless. You know that burning your lungs when you exert yourself? That’s the body reacting to high carbon dioxide and forcing you to breathe faster. We don’t breath to get oxygen so much as to get rid of highly toxic co2.
