If a Newt is poorly collimated, like the laser dot is coming out of it and hitting the wall, when you put a perfectly collimated laser into a good 2 inch adapter in the focuser and turn the laser, will it still define a circle on the wall instead of a dot? Good video, thank you.
@astronomyshed
@astronomyshed 6 ай бұрын
Possibly, because the actual focuser alignment may not be central to the tube. If the collimator is collimated and it's drawing circles then you have to look at every part of the chain. Focuser, secondary, primary.

@davidjones3635
@davidjones3635 8 ай бұрын
This method is flawed, the camera looking down the focuser does not account for perspective, if your laser collimator looks back on itself all is fine, and if the secondary is in the wrong position.. the image will vignette in ether four corners.

Hi mate, also based in the UK, would you know the specific part or mm? Just went to ScrewFix to get one that looked like it. A floplast push-fit socket plug 32mm but its too loose for the polarscope on my CG-4 mount unfortunately the only other size is a 40mm but that would just be bigger. Thanks.

As it says in the video, it was a flo plast 32mm bung, your polar scope must be a different size, my mounts were Skywatcher.

Good Day from Cardiff and thank you for all your helpful tips. I'm a complete beginner. But I do have a Skywatcher 250pds. I have flocked the inside and blackened the edge and back of the secondary mirror. As for the focuser, on the 250pds. I cant see the collimator screws that you said you can easily get to. Are the 250pds supposed to have one there. ? I cant post a photo on here sorry to show you my focuser. I got this 250pds secondhand. I've never used it yet,as I wanted to flock it ( which has been done now ) first and clean the mirrors before I use it. Thanks again for your helpful Vids Regards Roy

If you go to the link I'm going to post, look at the focuser, you will see 2 holes which are where bolts would fix it to the OTA then just inside from those where you see a circular ring, you can see 2 dark bolts with largish heads with tiny grub screws right beside them, those are focuser alignment/collimation screws. If your focuser doesn't have them, the only other way is to shim under the fixing bolts if the focuser is out of alignment. www.astroshop.eu/focusers/skywatcher-2-crayford-focuser-for-explorer-newtonian-reflectors/p,22264

The bit you (or I) may have missed is the rotational alignment of the polarscope in the mount. I'm new to an EQ3-2 and as i understand it the small ring on the larger ring in polarscope view should be at the 6 o'clock position with the mount set to 1st Nov. This seems to be essential if you are fitting a new polarscope or refitting your existing one.

Why are you using any bright star to align with and not Polaris, the noth star itself? I thought that was the point of the exercise, to align our mount with the earth's axis.
@astronomyshed
@astronomyshed Жыл бұрын
Because in this exercise, which is only part1 we are not polar aligning but making sure the mount is accurately calibrated for when we 'do' polar align, if the equipment isn't calibrated properly then a polar align will not be as accurate as it could be.
