I never think of that little fill as a paradiddle. To me it's just RLL (as a 8th note triplet starting on the down beat). If you think about each beat (quarter note), 1, 2, 3, 4, then you could do RLL on each beat as even triplets. You can put these little groups of RLL on any of the beats, or all of them. By thinking of it this way, it's easier for me. (The lead in left hand note just joins into it but doesn't create the little grouping itself -- if that makes sense). Also, you can do other combinations, like RRL, or RLR, creating different accents on different surfaces. Also, as a rockabilly drummer I rarely ever do the rim clicks. That's definitely a thing that happens since the 80s, but the older styles less so, in my opinion. I certainly wouldn't reduce rockabilly drumming to train shuffles on the snare/rim. Learn hihat shuffles and ride cymbal shuffles too. (blues drumming essentially), also straighten these beats out but keep the double hands playing to get an authentic rock n roll style. Check out sun records rockabilly and copy. It's a simple style but to do it authentically it takes a lot of listening and restraint.

Question! This is awesome, but how do you play so fast? My hands can't keep up. I can only play as fast as 3:08. How do you play as fast as 3:14? Do you use the shank technique on the hi hat? How do you practice this? I'm such a novice I don't even know if I'm making sense lol

in a d beat the cymbal is actually supposed to follow the kick drum on the crash or ride instead of staying on the quarter notes

What rudiment is the Jazz Samba close to? Apparently its a lot of rudiments hehehe.
@johnowensdrums7 күн бұрын
Interesting question, as a samba is a combination of single, double, and triple strokes; plus, double stops. Of course, the essence is the independence required. Honestly, you can put any rudiments in it that you want, fun question.

Hello out there. If you play triple stroke rolls, like the rudiment, is that playing in 6/8?
@johnowensdrums20 күн бұрын
Great question. It can be in 6/8 but it can also be another time signature depending on the rhythm.

Thanks for sharing this! 👍 I am a long-time hobbyist guitar player. I have been practicing some rudiments on an Evans practice pad and am looking into taking lessons and getting a decent drum kit that I won’t easily grow out of over the coming years. Could you recommend a 3 or 4 shell kit, a nice snare, and good cymbals in the $2-$3k range? I really like Keith Carlock and Josh Dion’s playing styles and sounds, among others. Any advice would be much appreciated.
@johnowensdrums22 күн бұрын
Awesome! Keep at the 3 rudiments in this video and you'll be able to apply them to everything. Regarding gear, for that price point you have a lot of options. A few brands I like are Ludwig, Gretsch, and Premier. One option might be the Ludwig, NeuSonic (I have a few students with these and they sound good, but you have to get new heads to really make them sing). For cymbals, be sure to put a good portion of your funds in them, as good cymbals make a huge difference, At that price point, I suggest the Zildjian A Pack or Sabian Stratus (I really like these, as I tried them out at PASIC and they sound awesome; plus, the price is great). Good luck and keep drumming.

and now....i add....paradiddle, ratamacue, , triplet, and double paradiddle....and.....lets add tonal changes......i am using 13, 14 on the rack, 16 inch floor tom to my left....to my right...16 and 18 floor toms......HOLY shit, THE tonal cadence can get intense.......and if you ever watch BUDDY RICH play......or Joe Jones.....
@johnowensdrums22 күн бұрын
I agree, all the rudiments are essential, but these three strokes (single, double, triple) are the core of everything. For example, a paradiddle is just a combination of singles and doubles and a flam tap is simply triple strokes. Thanks for sharing and I dig your kit configuration (18" floors are fun).

Great lesson - thank you 💛🩵 what Remo batter head are you using on your snare please? I have Evan’s G1s, and want to find their Remo equivalent - thanks!
@johnowensdrums22 күн бұрын
In this video I am using the Remo Fibersyn (Powerstroke version). Evans has Calftone heads, which are similar (I've tried them out). Personally, I like the tone and response of Fiberskyns, which I have been using for a long time. I believe the Evans G1 is the same an an Remo Ambassador.

It’s getting the heel toe and using the tip/shank methods that takes time when you are at speed….trust me. I just spent the last 4 years teaching myself to be a punk drummer…there can be shortcuts tbf oh ok he uses the slide technique or the tap dancer as I shall now call it! Ha
@johnowensdrums22 күн бұрын
I agree, the bass drum "tap dancer slide" takes some time to master, but once it is strong it can be used in punk beats and other styles. The real challenge is getting the needed power to make it pop. Thanks for comment and keep drumming.

Interesting thing i noticed about these accented rolls. The fact that the sevenstrokes, when looped fast, lose the16th note pause that is felt when it’s played at slower tempos (assuming the diddles are 16ths). Kinda one of those beautiful effects of drum phrases played “up to tempo.” All these years, when ive heard drummers play double-stroke rolls with accents, id have expected we were hearing a continuous string of notes. Anyway, much love, thank you🙏🏻🍻
@johnowensdrumsАй бұрын
This is a great point, as the 6 stroke is really played as a fluid sextuplet, which makes it smooth. Thanks for the comment and watching.
@ineedstuff82862 ай бұрын
Besides that beat, the 32nd note single-strokes with accents for drum fills, and that’s pretty much the general guidelines… a little natural creativity and really one is on there way! thank you John🙏🏻🍻Cheers!😎

My main issue with surf grooves is I just get so damned sore. They often play very fast and since I'm not using my dominant hand (I'm a leftie) I don't have the stamina in my right to play the ride consistently. Moreover, in songs like those of the ventures, they go ham on those snares and toms. I can play that fast, but not nearly for that long, and my thumbs just go straight to shit.

Suggestion rather than the title of the rudiment series.. just start title with rudiment. #20 Flam #6 DBL Stroke So on so forth. Much easier to find way more views.. Hope that is good insight, either way. Shall be using you channel To brush up on tech when showing my students some basics. Mahalo !!!
