Low mileage old car? Look out! It might be a factory lemon! Read on... I learned something about old cars with a vintage Jeep I had. It was rare 2WD 1960 Flatfender Jeep DJ-3A Dispatcher. 36,000 miles, never wrecked, never rusted. Clutch locked up after 400 miles. The clutch disc said "REBUILT" on it. The springs in it had broken to pieces and jammed it. The input shaft had mushed the pilot bushing on one side. Strange to see a rebuilt clutch on a vehicle with such low miles, but I replaced it all. 400 miles later, same thing. Went through four clutches trying to figure out what was wrong with that thing. Somehow the pilot bushing would get mushed on one side and ensuing vibration would shake the clutch until the cushion springs fractured. Finally tore the engine down because water got in oil and seized the rear main. That's when I found everything. The block surface had not been machined correctly, causing the head gasket to leak water into #3 cylinder. The center main bearing line-bore was so loose that the crankshaft would flex on acceleration, side-loading the pilot bushing and mushing it off to one side. This allowed the shaft to be slightly off-center and vibrating the clutch disc to pieces. Oh, and the cylinder head studs were too short. All this crappy machine work had been done at the factory in 1959. The Jeep was a lemon, it was always broken, and never got driven much. That's why it had such low original mileage. I fixed it all, got it running great, and sold it. I saw somebody on a Jeep Forum with a 1960 CJ-5 that was doing the exact same thing. I think it had even lower miles. It used the same crankshaft and same basic block as the DJ-3A. I'll bet the same boring bar, and probably the same guy, line-bored that one, too. I told the fella to tear the engine down and have line-bore checked. Never heard back.

85 thru 2000 were Toyota’s golden years. Simple, reliable, and easy to work on. Sadly, those days are gone.

It's got cruise control on the left stock for the turn signal switch. My 2002 SUNFIRE has the same thing. it's got the switch with the button on the end.

I thought the 302's came with 5 stud wheels... I put a 351 Cleveland in my 75 4 cylinder car and blew the rear end in about a week. Replaced it with one from a 302 that had 5 studs.

I remember those very well when I rented from Hertz car rental back then. The Cougar looked the same, except the roof wasnt as rounded off in the back. Some of those came with a 302 V8 also. People should have taken care of those cars and not gone crazy with foreign cars like they did. Those Tbirds and Cougars had the good rear wheel drive and good cast iron engines. Those mid 80s cars is what the 98 to 2011 Lincoln town cars were built off of. My 2005 Lincoln town car is actually the same thing but is longer with 4 doors, and has the 4.6 V8, but I like the mid 80s V6 and V8 better actually because you didnt have the awful cam chains and tensioners nightmare issues

These cars are indestructible, rust....so what, its a 96, most new cars wont last this long and this thing if its maintained wlll still be on the road for another almost 30 years.

For what the auction is going for its a good deal, but that rust is a lot more than what was stated. There's holes next to the front jack points though, really bad ones.
