The big forks are for large spools of wire or cable. For the phone or electric companies to pull lines or just transport to the big trucks.

Like so many other sports, it seems like big money, technology and sponsorships have taken the original spirt of the race and turned it into a commercial advertising event. The days of a hometown garage mechanic doing this race for the sport of it is long gone, buried by big corporate sponsors taking over what used to be a race of “because it’s there!” , with more sporting spirit and turned it into a money grab.

Just FYI Dylan! You have to come to the Adirondacks in New York and visit Whiteface Mountain ( with the original North Pole and Santa’s workshop est. 1948, America’s first theme park!) and drive up Whiteface, take the elevator the rest of the way to the summit! There you can see a panoramic view of the mountains and see the 1932 and 1980 Olympic venues near lake Placid!

Been there....in 1980....I was 10. Obviously I did not race but I have family in Cripple Creek! Old mining family! One of the old cabins my Great Great Uncle had was still there and abandoned. I found letters from my Grandma to her cousin in and around the cabin from the 1930s! I still have them and I have a wooden towel bar from the cabin!
