Ive condemned 3 of these cars in the last two years as a wholesaler. The transmission replacement is over $7000. If anyone knows a fix please comment!

Replacing the whole engine maybe overkill, but I get it. Where did the broken shard go? Probably causes some damage to the turbo too. If that happened, maybe also caused issues with oil journals.

Second owner to a 2012 Kia Optima sedan. 2 weeks ago it went on limp mode. Basically I idled the car to pass another vehicle and the bearings went out. Blown engine per Automative service. 100% great record of oil changes done on time. The vehicle had been brurning oil internally. The car never leaked oil on the concrete. I was given two options. Replace engine $6,5000 (12,000 miles or 12 mth warranty/dealership engine) or get rid of the car for around $1000.00. Cosmetically my Kia was in fantastic shape and with only 61,000 miles. Something doesnt sound right here! I did some research on this car. Theta II Class Action lawsuit settlement popped up. My vehicle did qualify for a new engine with no cost to me. Had vehicle towed 43 miles to dealership nearest to me. The Service Manager stated that he was not able to provide me with a rental but that I could go get one and that I would be reimbursed for $40.00 dollars a day. Now, who these days gets a rental for $40 a day?NOBODY!!!!! As for a towing it cost me out of pocket but I will be filing a claim online to have that charge reimbursed to me after a PI1326 code shows. The car also had the updates done in 2019 by the first owner(ksds/Engine control module). Please be informed and do your research. I was hours away from salvaging this car for no more than $1000.00 or someo ne knowing about this issue and making a huge profit of my ignorance. STAY INFORMED AND DO YOUR RESEARCH!!!!!!

I had Mitsubishi Lancer 2005 with GDI engine. Same issue .... knocking sound. Carbon built up was so rapid. I sold it on 2010. Bought KIA Sportage on 2013 with MPI engine because GDI version was not sold in my country. Until now no major issue ... the engine is still strong. Drive it for almost 10 years.

I call BS - the variator bearings ARE servicable - just that no shop has the equipment or knowledge on how to perform that kind of work. Got to treat the cvt differently than an automatic - no "hole-shot" starts, no quick change in direction backward/forward (etc). Flush the CVT every 30k miles or so is a must. I my have to get the pan dropped and filter (yes, there is one) changed at 45k miles due to the filter is almost six years old.

Why the transmission pan has 2 plugs? If you're the person shifts in drive while car still rolling back . Then it's you the problem not the transmission. CVT doesn't take crappy driver

How can I put up my car on a lift and do the same test ? Heard its not possible / good to do it since it at the very least would lead to ton of errors (its a hybrid version)

just unplug each coil while it is knocking when it quits you have found witch cylinder has a bad rod bearing ! "takes about 3 min. "

So replace the whole engine for a single cylinder with a bad valve? Why not replace the valve?

You could end up with low compression or oil going into the cylinder because he mentioned that the cylinder walls were scored it's a gamble you never know you might get away with it but do you really want to find out

So this is an expensive way to do a rod bearing test. Pull the plugs, go just past TDC and push a dowel down on the piston to test movement.

Just a burnt out valve,dont take notice of those bulletin s they say anything to get you buy new id of jus checked guide replaced valve and cut seat sorted

I have just got this issue in diagnostics. What do you suggest I do in this situation? My car barely reached 60k miles. I’m out of warranty and the dealer is asking $12k to fix it. Another mechanic tells me to replace the engine altogether. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated 😞

Get an engineer or different mechanic to get head off,put parrafin of soapy water or petrol in combustion camber,blow threw ports with air gun,check for leaks then my other message .....do all valve s

No, it not easy. The bottom has to be torn down and assess the damage. Most of the time the crankshaft will have to be replace.

@carchek-yt thanks. I've got the engine out. Gonna tear into it and see what's going on. Definitely in the crank area. Had a cylinder 2 misfire code after all this happened. It would start an idle but knocking like crazy. I'm just wondering if it's worth fixing or putting a used engine in? Not to familiar with these type engines so any info is appreciated

I’m guessing this is a 2.4L. These engines are known for this issue, so buying a used engine is risky. All depends on the extent of your current engine damage and your plans for the vehicle. If you are going to sell I will risk going used but if you are keeping it, rebuild or reman. Hope this helps.

My Wifes 2019 CHR developed a slight noise at 67K Miles, Toyota dealer diagnosed as needing a Tranny... Quoted $10,500... We Ran and Sold it to Car Max the next morning for a great price. I knew not to let the noise get loud. We just bought a new Mazda CX30 with 6 SP Auto Tranny, no more CVT's for us.

fault is with the valve guide getting excessive wear causing the valve to seat incorrectly.
