@@havenkolinski7569 hey! I’m pretty sure the sheet music I’m using as a reference in the vid is this: musescore.com/user/39593079/scores/19246573 It’s a hybrid of what’s written in the piano, vocals, and chord changes. Hal Leonard also has a simplified version in F if you don’t want to mess with Gb 😊👍

How do you play the arpeggio on the left hand in section B where you hold the B but have to play up the arpeggio to the D? Specially in the 3rd measure of Section B (around 0:41 in the video) I can’t stretch it but I also don’t want to add pedal just for that measure
@mrtylerlarson
@mrtylerlarson 4 күн бұрын
Hey Kevin! Thanks for your comment! Yes, I found the section in the sheet music that you're talking about. What I would do is invert the arpeggio so that the pattern is "B, D, G, B, G, D" rather than "B, G, B, D, B, G" That way, you're properly outlining the chord within the measure and you don't have to make any weird pedal choices. Unfortunately, sometimes sections of sheet music transcription get overthought and the arranger will go with whatever playback option they have and make a sonic choice. Unfortunately, this time, it's seemingly impossible to play that measure as written (unless, of course you've got hands that are bigger than Rachmaninov).

My conductor adapted this arrangement by Chip Davis for choir. We sang it for two years and he also wrote orchestrations for full orchestra for our concerts with orchestra and when we preformed it with the Philly Pops. Cool to find this now, it was a great song and everyone loved it.

I feel like this is the best sounding digital version I’ve come across. Almost every pianist playing this plays with slows and speed like Fitzpatrick but that’s what Cohen himself hated. He wanted that perfection.

Are you using sustain pedal throughout the entire piece? This book doesn't seem to indicate pedal on certain pieces, but others they do. Thanks!
@mrtylerlarson
@mrtylerlarson 3 ай бұрын
No I don’t think I used the sustain pedal at all during the piece. If you are to use it, just be sure to lift each time the chord changes otherwise it’ll get muddy fast. 👍

@mrtylerlarson
@mrtylerlarson 3 ай бұрын
Thank you, and I'm glad that it helped! I remember scouring KZbin trying to find a tutorial on the intro and it was DAUNTING! I ended up creating a hybrid of things that I found. I wasn't able to find the video that I used to learn it... I'm thinking he may have taken it down. There are a few others that are decent. The thing to keep in mind with the recording versus practically playing it is that the upper part was overdubbed an octave higher (same situation on Seven Seas of Rye by Queen), so you're hearing that main fast lick in two registers. You need your left hand to knock out those low notes, though, so the main changes I made were playing octaves in the left hand and then I think I changed up the arpeggio pattern in my right hand to better accommodate my own playing style. Gotta kinda make it your own, right‽ You'll get it! Just take it slow at first. Slow and accurate beats fast and messy every time! The speed will happen... just take it slow! I hope this helps! 🙂
