Wonderful performance but ruined by youtube’s abrupt, badly placed ad breaks. Aaaagh!

This is a beautiful and mesmerising composition. I must give it repeated hearings. However, what is going on with the giant mandarin lantern suspended above the players, which seems to appear and disappear at random, like an absurdist and menacing intrusion into the performance? For instance its gone in a puff of magic at 10:07? Bizarre, in a way that would have tickled Dali's and Buñuel's fancy! I often sit in the Royal Festival Hall and Barbican cheap seats, and ponder what can be done to take the visual convention and drama beyond dull Victorian seemliness, even if both venues are architecturally thrilling and highly modernist in their aesthetics. Love

I just attended a performance of this last week by the NY Philharmonic and Antoine Tamestit, where someone’s cellphone with a ringtone like an ice cream truck’s jingle went off TWICE. Nice to find this performance online with no cellphone interruptions.

@ihsandogramaci I was there too, the people in front of me were looking at their phones and making fun of Sofia Gubaidulina's picture in the program. Unbelievably rude.

The music is written as a dialogue. As a very tender dialogue! So the two soloists have to correspond with each other!

What a gem of a performance! One of the best. The description does not say if Power tuned his viola up a semitone or not. His instrument has a beautiful but dark tone that’s a great contrast to the violin’s brighter tone quality. Some sources claim that sharp tuning is not common today when the piece is played on modern violas.
@johannespihl10 ай бұрын
He is playing it in normal tuning 😊
@dougrife882710 ай бұрын
That's what I thought based on the tone quality. Not being a string player, I could not tell from his fingering. How do you know it's normal tuning?
@johannespihl10 ай бұрын
@@dougrife8827 I’m a violist, so I looked at his use of open strings and harmonics. For example he used a harmonic at one point at then I just checked if that corresponded to my own harmonic. If he had played scordatura it would not have been the same note. :-) It might be easier to look for his use of open strings than harmonics. If you then have the part or know which note it is you can check.
