Dan- I am beside myself with your video reaffirming of my 60+ years ago of distinct memories of spending my elementary school winter vacations at the Golden Gate (on both sides). My grandmother rented a villa for many winters (we are from Boston--snowbirds) and the family/cousins would flock to the GGH between 1968-1972. Incredible memories including the tram, and the "game room," poolside snack bar. We frequented HoJo's as you said for Ice Cream sodas--AND of course Wolfie Cohen's Rascal House Deli. I can't believe someone had video of a sliver of my youth and posted it online! What an awesome, awesome find. It's exactly how I recall it. THANK YOU!!

Excellent video. Unfortunately, the hotel was torn down and a facsimile was built adjoining to the huge development on that corner. I was planning on doing a video on this hotel and to include the fact that it was shown on 'Midnight Cowboy' but you beat me to it and performed a job way better than I could have done. Thank you for posting this!

I visited the Serpentarium sometime in the early 80's, so apparently just before it shut down. I was very young but I still remember Bill in the courtyard with the huge King Cobra. The audience was so relatively close! I was around 7 or 8. Both a fascinating, and terrifying place for me.

I graduated from Sacred Heart School in 1948, I loved the school and the beautiful Church. I was married there in 1954. I lived on Bayview Ave and had a short walk to school and church. We would wait outside the school until the principal, a nun, would ring this large bell in her hand. The first clang of the bell meant to stop whatever we were doing and proceed to line up to go into the school. Then rang the bell again. Then we went to school and no talking. I think about the good times I had. We had the sisters of Charity as our teachers. I miss those days and I am 89 years old now. Dot Boisvert

The pipe organ in Sacred Heart was by Geo. Kilgen & Son organ company of St. Louis, MO who also built the organs for St. Patrick's Cathedral NYC. It must have been magnificent and as it is still in the church should be dismantled, cleaned and stored until it can be repurposed in a new church home.

Thank you so much for creating this. My father was baptized in the original church, my uncle said his first mass here in 1935 shortly after being ordained and my parents were married here in 1943. Though they moved to North Arlington in the late 40's, we visited frequently when I was a child. I still have bookmarks with depictions of the stained-glass windows.

I saw the demolition with my own eyes in February of 2020 when I was visiting Hollywood. I returned in June of 2022 and they apparently rebuilt a complete facsimile of the facade of the Great Southern Hotel. Inside they built a 20 story rental apartments. Now the Hollywood Bread Building is completely gone.

This was a great place to visit. I was there a few times before it was closed down. If I remember the Alligator in the picture bit a kid that fell into his pit and killed the kid. Haast closed and moved it because of the bad publicity. There was a huge statue of a Cobra in front of the facility. It was a work of art for sure. Haast donated it to a school. I think the foot ball team were the Cobras. The crane operator dropped it and it broke into a bunch of pieces. So much for the statue. It was big, guessing (it was a while ago) 10or15ft high and 6or7 ft wide! Big beautiful Cobra. If you google Bill Haast with Jack Hanna in You tube you will see the statue
