I'm thinking of doing this on my 2003 ET4. In the early days, I would fill the gas tank, then it would not start. I'm thinking it was because of the Evap system. Right now, I just don't fill it up all the way and no problems.

Praise allah my scooter is fixed. One tip tho, make sure you tighten up your nuts to one Ugga-dugga. Anything less could lead to commutator rot! Nothing gets my wife’s knees opened up like a good backseat scooter ride.

Thanks for this. I'm in the process of renovating a 20 year old Benelli which runs the same Piaggio Leader engine. I was wondering if there might be be a retaining circlip sneaked inside the clutch/variator cover (which I can't yet remove because the clutch nut has been banged on with an air-hammer), because although the two retaining bolts came off easily, the motor don't want to shift...

@TimTuttle762

Quicker acceleration and lower end torque , but the trade off is lower top speed , but it's rare I get over 35-40 mph in town , so it was a win for me

hello tim, I ve just bought an et4 150 2004 for a really good price cuz it came with some problems. This is my first ever scooter so Im new in these things. Should I do this and why ? how does my scooter benefit from it ?
@TimTuttle762
@TimTuttle762 4 жыл бұрын
The evap system can cause rough idle , hard starts and other issues on the ET4 . I removed mine over starting issues , but for me another benefit was the removal of " extra baggage" in the engine compartment , and the simplification of the fuel system . All that said , unless you live in an area that has emissions testing for small motors , there is no reason not to rip that garbage off your bike !

Hi Tim, I have a Piaggio 150 and it cranks really slow almost stopping when on the compression stroke and it won't start because it is slow. It sounds like the starter is laboured but the engine isn't seized. I have checked the Bendix, put 12v from a different battery directly to the starter motor itself but it still is cranking slow. Do you think the starter motor may be the culprit? Cheers
@TimTuttle762
@TimTuttle762 5 жыл бұрын
Assuming the battery is ok , and you cant ever trust a battery ! Then i would start looking at the starter , if it was crazy slow , and i knew my battery was defiantly not the reason , I would be tempted to pull the spark plug and see if it cranks over faster with zero compression , I don't know why I would , but I would . Make sure the connections to the starter and battery are spotless , any of the green crusty will ruin your day !

@TimTuttle762
@TimTuttle762 5 жыл бұрын
Well with that added to your issue with the over flowing oil in your crankcase , I am almost willing to bet your floats in your carb are stuck open , and is allowing gas to flood the carb and flow down into your cylinder and into your crank case causing it to be over flowing when you took the cap off ..... Take that cap back off and I am willing to bet it smells of gasoline ! You've got some work ahead of you on this one , that carb as to come back off and pay particular attention to the float , and its needle valve . be almost willing to be its not assembled correctly . Once thats sorted out you will have to change that oil , its contaminated with gasoline and will not lubricate properly . You also may have to pull and clean the spark plug as well , its probably soaked in gas
@iancook5664
@iancook5664 5 жыл бұрын
Tim is there any way I could send you some videos and pics of you to take a look at ? And when I take the cap off the crank case n it overflows should I drain it out ?

Yeh u was 100% on the oil being mixed with petrol iv drained it n took the carb back off , is it worth fixing or should I just scrap metal the bike ?
@TimTuttle762
@TimTuttle762 5 жыл бұрын
Defiantly worth fixing assuming nothing else is wrong with it , the floats are a easy fix and are probably the problem . I would pull the bottom part of the carb off , the "bowl " portion the bottom metal bowl shaped part , the part i am removing here in this portion of the video staring at 4:00 kzbin.info/www/bejne/aGOWqaqco92titU the the floats can bee seen at 5:22 , the tan colored parts , make sure that they installed correctly , and are free to move up and down opening the passage for fuel . When working on it , you will have the carb upside down so take that into account when checking its function . Feel free to send me pictures , video response , etc and I will lend any advice !

My Vespa will sometimes start and other times nothing happens when I try to turn on, I checked the battery and it has sufficient voltage, would the problem be my starter?
@TimTuttle762
@TimTuttle762 6 жыл бұрын
Could be ! But , if absolutely nothing happens , no click of the relay , or Bendix on the starter solenoid , it could be the starter switch , relay , etc . don't neglect the cheap things in the circuit !

Tim, watched your video's with interest since I have a 2003 Vespa 150 ET4 and could you tell me where you obtain parts like Oil filters, crank case "o" ring, crush gasket for transmission drain plug and what engine oil do you use, I know what the manual calls for, but where I live anything like what I need is in heard of. Thanks

Honestly my biggest source of parts is eBay , but if I am in a pickle and cant find it there , www.scooterwest.com/ is a great source of parts and their videos are great on here . As for motor oil , I use just about any 5w-40 full synthetic , locally Castrol 5W-40 synthetic is usually pretty easy to find and I use that , 5w-40 can be harder to find, but most Autoparts stores carry it in the States, you will need just over a liter , so if you order it , get more than you think you will need , nothing would be more terrible than having to order more and waiting to finish a oil change !

hi...im have about the same problem you have. But i cant use my kickstarter at all. And the starter was barely doing anything..mostly a slight turn and then no sounds at all. Question: Is the solenoid the same as the relay? Since labor is so expensive for scooters, ive gone ahead and purchased most of the starter related parts like the relay, remote switch, and ignition starter button. I skipped the starter itself for now. Thanks!
