Your adventure has help me so much! I just received a job offer for Maryland. How long did it take your license to get approved? Also, did you have to wait until you were completely done with school and your hours to apply?

Aw thank you, I am so happy it has helped you! Congratulations on the job offer ☺👏🏻 My license process was fairly quick! I believe it got approved within a few weeks or a couple of months :) From what I remember, you could only apply once you were done with school since you had to have hours approved and a document from school saying that you received your degree, I applied a week or so after graduation.

Hi! Thank you so much for reaching out about this plus congratulations! I honestly was never a big "write in a notebook" girl- I typically would make my study sets on Quizlet during class so I could start studying them. I have a bunch left on my profile if you want me to share! It is also beneficial to know the process of what you are learning about, not just studying surface value but really being able to discuss the topic with others and know your stuff :)

Hi! You look so happy and fulfilled working with children 😊 I have some questions to ask since I'm exploring the field of SLP. What are the main differences between working in a clinic vs. schools? Pros and cons for both settings? Are there certain cases that you would mostly see in clinic than in a school? Would you ever switch to a different specialty/patient population like working with adults, working in a hospital setting, etc.? I am interested in working with children, and I really appreciate these videos! I still need to watch more of your vids haha 😆Thank you for sharing your journey in this field 💖
@YourLocalSpeechie

Hey Melanie!! You are so sweet, thank you 🥰 I am happy you enjoy these! So far in my clinic, I have seen a lot of sensory/autism kiddos and early intervention! Only a handful of articulation kiddos. And for schools, the caseload depends on how old your kids are and the type of school :) 1) School pros: if you are working for the district you will get: better benefits, a better work shift (typically out by 3 pm), summer off if you want, you make your own schedule of when you see the kiddos, you might have a high caseload but you can group kids to make it easier, salary over hourly School cons: likely lower pay, a lot of documentation, many meetings, you will do things out of your field (bus duty, etc), can be hard if teachers are rude and don't like when you take kids out of class 2) Clinic pros: 1:1 sessions, likely higher pay, potential for more training and help from other slps working with you Clinic cons: less benefits, some won't pay you if a client cancels, high caseload, more evals, long days (most clinics close around 6 pm) I personally would not switch populations simply because I feel more comfortable with kids and I prefer that caseload over stroke, dysphagia, etc! Let me know if you have more questions! I appreciate your comments ☺

Hi! It was interesting hearing you talk about your experiences from undergrad. I've always been interested in learning about other CSD/SLPs experiences from their undergrad. My undergrad program didn't have a GPA requirement, nor did I have to apply to be accepted into their program. I just switched my major and went into the program blind. I didn't have a 3.5 GPA when I started. I was a B-student! If my undergrad program HAD a GPA requirement, I would have been denied or removed. I would have pursued special education or early childhood studies and applied as an out-of-field student. Taking SLP courses during undergrad was stressful. Some professors contributed to the stressful atmosphere for the students. It was hard to not compare myself to my peers who did better than me. I wondered back then if I was in the right major because I didn't get many As back then. I've come a long way from my undergrad days. I'm on my second year of grad school in a part-time program! I finish up next summer. Nice video :)

I loved hearing your story! It sounds similar to mine, how I was the B student also and the first time I got denied for the undergrad program I was going to pursue early childhood studies :) It is great to see where you are now, congrats on being in the second year! Almost done 👏🏻👏🏻 Can't wait to see where you go after grad school!

Hey I worked at my public library (reference desk). We had a resource called learning express. Learning express had practice test from act, gre, to the SLP praxis. If you use this resource they will ask u which mode would you like to take the test (simulation, learning, study). For the learning and study mode they corrected your answer as you went through the test and they give you an explanation why all the answers correct or wrong. I'm just passing the info along. This is a shorten explanation, but if you want more details, just ask 😊 for any future clinicians I'm happy you passed

@YourLocalSpeechie

Hi! I am a second-year graduate student in an SLP program. I do not recommend taking the Praxis in your undergraduate years because you will not have gone through all the classes and academic experience yet for the test. I took my Praxis early for my second year but it is recommended to take the Praxis before you graduate from grad school.
