Very interesting video but I can't understand the logic of making adjustments before you set the colour profile? Until the colour profile tab is activated PhotoLab is using the default colour profile of Neutral Colour. As each colour profile introduces both colour and tonal adjustments, thus changing the histogram, I would have thought it logical to set this first?
@chriswrightphotographs
@chriswrightphotographs 2 сағат бұрын
Good point, thanks for raising it. This was an afterthought. I don’t always use Color profiles, it usually depends what the raw looks like. In this case it was logical to use the Canon profile as it added something to the image, but I don’t think that is always the case.

Hi Chris. Is there any possible reason that some of my Fuji Raw images get an error?
@chriswrightphotographs
@chriswrightphotographs Күн бұрын
Depends on the error. If you're starting with PhotoLab, is the right profile being applied? Beyond this, unfortunately there are lots of candidates. if the error is intermittent, it's likely to be an error in the chain transferring the image to the drive - so either the card, the card reader, the cable attaching reader to computer, the drive you are loading the image to. I would try to isolate the error - if it's intermittent that suggests a problem with the card, so try shooting with a different card and see if it happens again. If it does, check the card reader etc.

The actual Film Sim data is encapsulated within the Fuji RAW file, but it needs a compatible color profile in the processing software to render it. DxO do not currently support this although there are plenty of fuji profiles available in FilmPack. Ricoh GR III cameras have a similar issue. Of course if you were to shoot in RAW + Jpeg, the exported jpeg would display the Film Sim characteristics.

I just bought the Ricoh GRIIIx primarily for street photography, I have added a lens hood by Squarehood and the thumb rest. This should improve the dust resistance and grip. I also have the Olympus TG-6 and an older Canon M5 which I have had for several years. You don't have to worry about dust or weather with the TG-6 (nor water to a point) but it's only a 12MP sensor. The Canon with the available 22mm prime is a good street photography camera and more weather sealed. I primarily bought the Ricoh because of its features like snap focus in street photography. This feature might be of little or no use for your purposes but is a wonderful tool for street photography. You can't preset the focus on the Canon even with a prime lens. All in all I'm looking forward to using the Ricoh with the caveats that you have mentioned. Thank for the great videos and keep them coming.

I regard the s in XD2s (it has not yet been changed from XD2 in PureRAW 4, which was updated yesterday) to be an otherwise invisible argument for a premature beginners jumping at PhotoLab8. Think twice. The larger window for showing sharpness is an enormous improvement from 7, but why do the improvements have to come in small increment, when full screen has been available with PureRAW 4 for at least a year - with adjustable parameters and preview for 100 and 200 percent? The best combination between Artificial Intelligence for noise reduction and a healthy economy is DxO PureRAW 4 with the free Darktable. I finish 98 percent of my raw-images in Darktable (2 percent in Affinity Photo 2). Should I - in rare situations - get bored with the result in Darktable I try the same file in PhotoLab7 (a constant near death experience), for to this day the result has never beaten what I could accomplish with Darktable. So, unless e.g. real flexible masking has been integrated in PhotoLab8, why bother at all. It's just a money machine for DxO. Version 8 will probably still partly depend on a number of expensive plug-ins or add-ons, typically features that would be included in other raw editors. Add to that tricky policy the student responders protecting DxO's dev division - as opposed to Darktable's team of dedicated developers and users, always ready to help.

I think I’ll be passing on this one. Not enough new to justify the upgrade price again. No AI masking nor any kind of AI removal. The repair and clone tool though is the best for manually adjusting things to get a very good result in most cases. But apparently the Auto Mask still doesn’t preview what has been selected which is absurd at this point. And still no layers of any kind. The basic Selective Tone tools are still very bad in my opinion. Each slider affects WAY too much of the image with way too much overlap of the controls and things quickly fall apart. DxO needs to overhaul that area with an eye for how those controls work in Capture One (the best at those adjustments in my opinion) or Lightroom. The interface STILL has no useful customization or resize ability. I guess even that is never coming. So many of the things that I kept hoping would be addressed with each new release never happens and we just keep getting a few new watered down versions of tools that have been available in other software for years and we’re expected to pay a substantial amount for another upgrade. I just don’t see DxO suddenly catching up or getting close to Capture One, which I also use, or especially Lightroom in feature set and interface that are pulling way ahead at an accelerated rate. I’ve used DxO software for many years now and have upgraded many times since Optics Pro versions but I think, sadly, that this is it for me now. I may not need every feature that Capture One or Lightroom offers but PhotoLab just seems to be falling behind ever faster. For just a bit more than the price to upgrade I may just go with PureRAW for the lens corrections and noise reduction and possibly upgrade that only when I feel it’s worth it to do so.

@@chriswrightphotographs unfortunately I didn't research properly when I got back into photography 5 years ago and Paint Shop pro produced flat lifeless images. Even after shot pro wasn't much better. I remember people at work talking about affinity photo and I bought version 2 the day it came out for about £35. It was transformative, and after adding topaz Denoise AI I found I could mitigate the noise taking hand held in low light. DXO PL 7 has taken the raw processing to a whole new level. My images glow and pop. I love how detail is retained in the shadows. I often export the Tiff to affinity for clean up and launch Nik plugins from affinity so I can combine the power of layers with a filters application. The in-painting tool and clone tool is better in affinity than photolab. I also prefer a manually applied Orton effect in layers so I can paint it on or selectively apply using a luminosity mask over Nik glamour glow. I have avoided the Adobe trap. I figured if I don't start it I won't miss it. I appreciate it's very good, but it's surplus to what I need as a hobbiest. Thanks. I figured DxO would wait until PL8 to further enhance DeepPRIME. Have you compared XD2s with XD directly (and why does the button say "XD/XD2s"--can you choose either)? One of the things that bothers me (especially after years of upgrades to all DxO products--I have the latest iterations of everything they make, sans PureRaw, as 100% of that should be included with PL) is that, although I feel that DxO products are well worth the initial investment, they charge way too much for upgrades--punishing their loyal customers. It would be cheaper to subscribe to LR/PS (ironically, I went to DxO when Adobe started that scheme). Also, as others have mentioned, what's it going to take to get DxO to finally adopt AI masking?! Failing to incorporate that is a huge marketing blunder, especially as it's so ubiquitous now. Of course, they should also incorporate Nik into PL (as they have ViewPoint and FilmPack), but maybe that's a technological hurdle they've yet to figure out how to overcome (or is that a marketing thing?)...

Thanks for this review and demo - much appreciated. It looks like the PL8 curves tool is an improvement on the Nik7 Color Efex Levels and Curves tool as well. Now I have to decide whether to upgrade to PL8 now or wait until Black Friday. Trouble, trouble!

I always upgrade all my photography software on Black Friday. Remember, patience is a virtue 👌 🙌 🙂

You're right about improving on the Nik Curves tool. This may be the single most significant improvement in PL8.

It is useful to remind those not familiar with DXO that they generally offer a substantial discount on their software over the weekend after "Black Friday"

Thank you for the video. Just subscribed. One question: is Nik Collection an add-on or is it included in PL8? Thanks!

Thank you. Unfortunately Nik Collection is not included in PL8, it's a significant set of tools in its own right. Historically, Nik was a different company and DxO have made a great job of integrating it with the rest of the DxO portfolio over the years since they acquired it..
