My grandfather made his own alcohol and kept the Everclear in a Gin bottle. My buddy and I would sneak into it when we were like 10 years old. We would take one jigger size shot each and lay on our backs, trying not to puke for like 15 minutes. Then we would get up and be drunk af. Luckily, we never drank any more than that. We are lucky to be alive.

A friend of mine (in the UK) built a still and gave me a bottle of Moonshine he'd made which was 85% ABV. That was quite smooth and drinkable at proof, (in very small volumes). But 95%ABV? That's close to absolute alcohol. Is Everclear available outside of the USA?

Um, I just want to point out that with the right credentials you can actually purchase 200 proof lab grade ethanol and even get the certificate of analysis for the lot you purchase from. There’s also 190 proof lab grade ethanol but the quality is less… the 190 proof lab grade appears to be distilled from cereal/grain spirits while the 200 proof appears to be synthesized directly from oxidation of ethane.

Alcohol and water influence each others boiling and melting points when mixed (all substances do, the effect depends on the type of intermolecular attraction/repulsion and how strong they are compared to interactions between molecules in the pure substances). In the case of water and ethanol, the BP of ethanol (usually 78 °C) rises and the one of water (usually 100 °C) sinks, until they are equal in the final mixture of about 95 % ethanol and 5 % water, where both substances have a BP of about 85 °C, resulting in destillation not actually separating the substances any further. So to get 100 % pure ethanol you cant just use a destillation, you have to dry it some other way (for example drying the ethanol over MgSO4)

In the UK, we have something called alcohol units. You can do the maths by timing the ABV by the millilitres then divide by 1000. In UK 8 g or 10 mL is 1 standard unit. Everclear: 95% ABV in a 750ML MATHS: 95 x 750 ÷ 1,000 =71.25 So that is 71.25. So yeah that’s crazy. UK medical chief recommends that adults don’t drink more than 14 units per week. Men: 3-4 units daily Women: 2-3 daily
