In the vietnam era was when it was a failure. They literally handed them the rifle saying it cleaned itself and when it jammed they didn't know how to clean it. They werent taught how

@Xiolablu3 They obviously could tweak and fix this weapon, but it is still a worsened baby of the G36. This weapon looks like star-ship troopers and might fix some problems of the over 10 year old M4/M16s, but they are still dwarfed by the ACRs (SCAR, Bushmaster) and the other ACR configuration type weapons such as the HK416 which fix all the old problems as well as enhance other aspects while retaining the same parts and look. So, good choice they made. "Sry, no pretty gun for u boy"

This gun melts under sustained fire and becomes useless. I hate all the internet fanboys who say "Wow why isn't this replacing the M16?" just because they think it looks cool.

@theMIGHTYloaf that wasn't the rifle's fault. they needed to use the right ammo instead of the cartriges w/ "dirty powder" in it.

@theMIGHTYloaf The problem was not the gun.The ammo they used to test the gun and run stress tests was not the same type of ammo used out on the field.That was the prob.

They canceled the production to get the US army to adopt the xm8 in 2005 it either originated in Germany or the US

HOPEFULLY, THE MILITARY SMARTENS UP AND REPLACES THE M4 WITH THE 416 IN EVERY BRANCH.

THE XM8 IS A GOOD GUN, BUT THE ARMY SHOULD HAVE ADDOPTED THE HK416 WHEN IT WAS CANCELLED, JUST LIKE HOW THE MARINES HAVE WITH THE IAR. Y IS THE CORPS SO MUCH SMARTER THAN THE ARMY, AND GET THE BEST WEAPONS FOR THEIR SOLDIERS THAN THE ARMY DOES. @theMIGHTYloaf no, you can thank the government for that fault powder. when the gun was designed, it was actually built around a cleaner, more refined powder, but the government went cheap and used cheap stuff thus making the already built and designed gun, essentially a walking jam. however, improvements were made fast, and the m16a1 became a formidable weapon.
