Port those cylinders, adapt some better reed valves(e.g. from a >=250cc dirtbike or after market) and build a tuned resonance exhaust and that two-stroke will fly 🚙💨

That little engine and transmission would be perfect for a model A roadster go kart build.

That has reed valves 6 years before bikes started using them, and big ones too. That looks fairly modern rather than old piston port design porting.

Honestly tiny obscure cars are the best. Usually a fan of dumb motor insertions but 100% agree with non-bastardisation of this one

As others have commented keep the oil injection. Premix actually leans the mixture as it replaces petrol through the carb jets. People adding to much oil to premix - to "improve" durability in the worst case have burnt holes through pistons. Using premix properly should mean re-jetting the carb. Most 2 strokes use standard bearings and seals - Alan Millyard has videos where he shows how to align the crank when you press it back together.

This needs the little 3 cyl turbo engine from a Suzuki Swift turbo (Same as Chevy Sprint, Pontiac Firefly, etc) Probably the exact right amount of power to be fun, and not totally over power the chassis, rear end, etc.

Jumping late to the engine swap suggestions... Hearing you think about putting single cylinder motorcycle engine just sounds too funny to me. So my suggestion along those lines would be kawasaki klr650 engine !
@woznaldoКүн бұрын
Be very careful with single cylinders. The vibration is horrendous without a balance shaft. KTM690 has one, the smaller motors don’t.
@AdamForemanКүн бұрын
I'd still like to see you investigate what motorcycle engine could be a viable swap. Nothing more than a 350cc - 600cc. It's definitely not worth swapping it to anything higher

Watching that motor come apart sure did reminded me of the fancy liquid cooled two stroke sled engines from over here in the frozen wasteland of Hoth. If you can sort out machining and maybe some welding of the crank case to attach your bellhousing, come up with a way to mount your flywheel on a tapered crankshaft output and figure out if the crank bearings can handle the thrust from working the clutch, then a snowmobile engine might be perfect for you. There is a whole lot of customization, performance and real world experience that could be tapped to build the exact motor you want! Only thing that might challenge the sled crowd would be tuning the carbs for +30C instead of -20C :) Thanks for the vids and best of luck with the rebuild!

Water cooled exhaust? I'm guessing it's exhaust heated water. Getting these things up to temperature might have been a problem, and gets the cabin heater working sooner for Japanese winter weather. Also, how about modernising the engine further? EFI shouldn't be difficult. Would be a cool lil project to make the car much nicer to drive. Use a MicroSquirt or rusEFI ECU, super cheap and plenty capable enough for this.

Whilst the engine is in pieces, is their chance in getting the parts scanned and measured so you can make aluminium billet engine later?
@jnljnl8485Күн бұрын
No need to replace the bottom end if it's good I'm betting you can find some power valve cylinders that will bolt on with just a little modification. Then you could just rebuild with readly available parts.

The architecture of that engine looks very similar to a Fuji engine I had in a 1995 Polaris jetski. I bet you could gain some power by switching to a piston with modern rings; those things are massive! As a former ST1100 owner, that is a sweetheart of an engine, but some of its larger Goldwing siblings came with reverse.

Woody, On what you can do with a tiny car; on my way to this episode I saw an Austin Mini hauling around Good wood Racecourse at full chat giving a strong looking Mustang V8 a real fit for laps. But is was a full up race car with all that entails, I'm sure, and I'm also sure it will never be a street car again, either. Interesting little car- many of the Japanese Kei cars are- the little sports models especially. Al's buddy, Benny's Custom Garage is into the Cappuccinos, so you might call over there. On your crank; if your buddy isn't available, any motorcycle shop should be able to handle the disassembly and reassembly with the new bearings- trapped ball bearings are pretty common on MC multi cylinder engines.

Are the main bearings needle/roller? I've never seen that. I miss Alan breaking down all the strange engineering choices. You guys were clearly surprised by the pressure plate, I assume because it used a circle of coil springs instead of the normal finger springs. It looked weird for sure. I have no idea what you were even talking about with the driveline safety feature comments under the car I'd love if you spent a bit more time explaining and clearly pointing out what you're talking about the way Al used to.

Hey Woody, can I recommend watching some of Robot Cantina (@robotcantina). He has done a few small engine conversions into cars and coupling them to factory transmission via cvt or custom adaptors. Most recent is a V twin lawnmower engine into a Renault R10 which is fully reversible
