Did you trade the bike for a 1290R? I'd be interested to hear about what you think of the differences. I'm an off roader but I'm thinking of buying the 1290 Adv S. I don't want the R because it's significantly taller and that just makes it more of a burden on and off road. The R suspension is obviously capable of much higher speeds off-road, but I don't care to push a big bike that fast off-road. The spoked wheels are best if you're a fast rider and pushing it, but I'm not pushing into bent rim territory on a bike like that. Also in Canada the ADV R is speed limited to 180km/h, and even my T7 at less than half the HP hits that speed. The ADV S doesn't have the limit. I have an Africa Twin and a Tenere 700. I hate the tenere 700 because it's like an XR 650 on the street and feels as heavy as a goldwing in the dirt. I actually have a lot of fun on the Africa Twin but I've had it for 8 years and I'm just kind of bored of it. Both bikes are DOGS off road and I have no interest in pushing the limits. I have a hand full of dirt bikes that I ride and race off road, that's where I am 95% of the time. But I can't own a pure street bike because I live out a muddy dirt road and I go to a lot of places in the dirt, but still want to have the most fun I can on the street which is always a novelty for me when I get that chance to take a street legal bike out for a ride. Sorry to be that guy, but if you're looking to tune up your off road skills, have you considered something like a CRF250F? You can buy one for about $4000 used, ride it for a year or so, and sell it for the same price. Do static balance drills, set up a mini-cone coarse, learn log hops, and wheelies. Set aside a few hours a week to "train". I do a lot of racing and those simple drills I did at home in my yard made the biggest difference in my riding and helped bump me up from beginner classes to A class. Simply riding challenging terrain didn't actually teach me much before the learning curve flat-lined. The skills transferred to ADV bikes and I can get them into places they definitely don't belong. I go on a big trip every so often on a big bike, this summer it was 6 weeks. Every time I do this, it takes me a couple weeks to get my skills dialed back in on the race bikes. ADV bikes literally erode your off road skills away. I think they're too big and cumbersome for a beginner to learn on. You can do it, but it requires deliberate focused training and would take much longer than it does on a small bike you're not afraid of crashing many times repeatedly for hours at a time. Anyway hopefully you're on some new bike somewhere having a blast and not reading youtube comments, cheers.
