Anyone recognise the guitar theme, or was this just some improv piece for British Rail?

You can't step foot near the track these days without a line blockage granted where no trains will pass through the site of work...that is until a signaller has a lapse of concentration. We're all human, so it will happen at some point, with devastating consequences no doubt...I still think lookout protection is one of the safest most efficient methods of work, obviously not counting a T3 possession...maybe incorporated with modern technology early warning systems alongside the flag and horn.

A very interesting film, and worth contemplating the changes that happened. One question comes to mind, though - what happened to all those zoom lenses of the mid to late century?

It still makes me slightly alarmed to see in cab ride videos on the Continent how trains will switch tracks with no signal indication at all, as long as the speed on the diverging route is no lower than on the main route. That doesn't look right to me at all

The most obvious reason for these accidents is not looking for trains, walking in the 4ft on a running line is not wise, and even when the line is blocked, you still keep looking.

British Rail was and still is a good organisation which had all the rail maintenance in house Unlike Railtrack and now network rail which got rid of the in house maintenance of the tracks electrification and Signalling and Telecommunications to agencies who are better at safety critical work instead of Network Rail who’s safety records are shockingly bad Since 1994 60 Trackworkers have been killed

What a shame all that modernity is now also gone, last time I came past Glasgow Central, Motherwell, even the Kingsmoor signalboxes were all boarded up, very shortsighted because with the removal of station staff, the only people in an area of railway control is a driver of a train and a guard if you are lucky to still have one and every incident is at least half an hour away from attending where at least having signalmen strategically sited along a line meant very quick response times and taking control of a potential disaster. My late father a signalman was one of the first railmen to arrive at the Lewisham disaster and he RAN all the way down the line from North Kent East Junction signalbox and it was said he as did the other first responders saved lives.

Level crossings in the States, for those that have flashing lights and/or gates, were fully automated by 1950.

I was born in 1964 in the States. Here, all single-track signaled railways were fully automatic for decades before that. The Reading and Pennsylvania railways were fully automatic before 1900.
