I followed your steps, but with one extra step, I had a bootable windows 7 USB, when I was using the recovery mode with this USB I was getting an error. I created a new different bootable USB from a different windows 7 ISO file, then I used I recovery mode to restore from an image, this time it worked.

This is still relevant in 2025. Even though I am writing at the end of December 2024, I don’t think anything will change in 3 days. I installed Linux Mint, but it sees the old printer, but does not print. Therefore, I have to install a virtual machine to print from Windows. And the virtual machine didn't see the printer via USB. Your advice helped me a lot.

sudo chmod 777 -R /Everybody would have saved a lot of typing. 😊 Although not sure these are the correct permissions to use as they give everyone write access not just the named user.

Another way to prevent the user "kid" from logging into the system would be to create the user with the command below: $sudo useradd kid -s /sbin/nologin

If you share the folder "Everybody", everything that's inside of it is already also shared (subfolders).

The passwords for SAMBA don't need to be the same as the ones used for the system. In fact, for security reasons, they should be diffferent.

I see what you did there. You confused the word ‘repair’ with the word ‘bodge’. That drive shaft will have had some form of lubrication applied to the bush, through which the shaft runs. Over the years, that lubrication is likely to have gone bad, dried up, whatever. Careful application of lighter fluid (not butane lighter gas), acetone or IPA might soften or reduce that old lube and allow the introduction of some newer alternative like lithium grease. Even a few drops of fine machine oil to create a thin coat between the bushing and the shaft. Maybe you could provide an update after that repair.

Thanks! My issue is Windows cannot restore a system image to a computer that has different firmware. The system image was created on a computer using EFI and this computer is using BIOS. I am convinced image and new SSD drive are EFI and boot option is set to UEFI. Any ideas?

Seems kind of dumb that you have to do this at all. I don't see the purpose of VirtualBox requiring the host user to be in a special group just to attach a USB drive to a guest OS. I don't see how this significantly improves security and it just makes VirtualBox that much harder to use on Linux.

stupid things that can complicate a night because of a silly vbox because of things like this, the slightest foolishness in linux can take you days to find a solution.

This fixed my issue. Thanks so much. Such a stupid little thing to have to do but if you don't know to do it or how to do it is a pretty significant aggravation. It would be nice if virtual Box explained this when you click the "?" near the USB error. I connect to USB drive with VirtualBox on Windows with no problem and I don't have to go through this crap.

Oh, hold it - one additional question - how would you BACKUP your file server?? To avoid data loss, should your hard drive crash?

Awesome! I guess in order to also run a Webserver, all I need to do is add an apache. I figure since I will keep this machine running 24/7, I might as well also host my private website on it. Hey, how would you ideally backup the server?

You use it for "Cold Swapping", but anyone watching this, thinking of other solution than turning your PC off before switching, BETTER USE eSATA connection, OR USB for "hot swapping". ..since its designed for it! -but if you still want to "Hot Swap" drive connected tru regular SATA: 1) in any case, remember to ALWAYS to Unmount / "Safely remove" that drive FIRST, before you can power it off. (use "sync" command in linux, Optimize that drive for "Safely removal" in Windows "Drive properties" or POWER OFF YOUR PC in case the drive is locked by some program, so the unmount is not possible. 2) use only very high quality power on/off switch! 3) check if your motherboard (or drive controller) SUPPORT "Hot Swap"!
