Sounds like a cool project but the talking intro with the roughing gouge is extremely long, I didn't make it past that.

Nice video. I have watched a few of them and I subscribed because you are a good instructor. How often do you have to sharpen the tools? You mentioned that you sharpened part way through this mallet project. I guess it probably depends on the quality of the tool and maybe the hardness of the wood.
@TurningStitches
@TurningStitches 26 күн бұрын
Kevin - you are correct that sharpening depends on the tool and wood. Ideally if you notice a tool not cutting as well it’s time to sharpen. When I am getting close to my shape and size on a project, I often sharpen then to get a really clean cut. Clean cuts reduce sanding. If I am using a scraper on a bowl interior for example, I don’t even turn off the grinder. I may sharpen every 30 to 45 seconds. It’s also helpful to make sure your grinder is close to your lathe. Thanks for watching. And keep the questions coming!

I'm loving the lessons. Was gunna make a whiskey smoker as my next project. But now I'm thinking maybe a plate instead.
@TurningStitches
@TurningStitches 29 күн бұрын
Small plates like the one I show here really don't take too long! You might be able to complete both in one longer day. Most of the whisky smokers I have seen are cut on CNC machines. I would be curious if you can make a thicker platter than demonstrated here and turn it into a whiskey smoker? In either case, I would love to hear how it goes! Thanks for watching!

@@TurningStitches I did make a whiskey smoker. I'm relatively happy with it. My homemade woodworm screw is not quite perfect so the lid and the base of the smoker don't line up unless you turn them a little. Last night, I made a gnome. If you don't giggle a little while gluing the beard on a gnome, you probably should check yourself into a nervous hospital.

Thanks for the lessons. I made two mallets yesterday. When are you going to make a turkey pot call?

Awesome! I am sure you will get a lot of use out of the mallets. I am not familiar with a turkey pot call exactly. I will have to look that up and add it to my list of topics! Thanks!

Bit dry isn’t it?
@TurningStitches
@TurningStitches Ай бұрын
Yes, I did not lubricate the bit before drilling. I have not drilled wood using lubrication whether using the lathe, battery drill or drill press. I suppose a little mineral oil, tung oil etc. would not hurt. Thanks for watching and posting your question. If you have any other thoughts or questions, I would love to hear them. Thanks again!

Thank you for continuing these educational videos, for us newer turners they are very helpful. That looks like a heavy duty carbide cutter! May I ask the make? Again, thank you, look forward to your help.

I am glad the videos are useful, that’s what I was hoping for. The tool I am using in this video is made by Robert Sorby tools. It is their Turnmaster System. There are links for this tool in the video description that may help you with more research on the tool. The setup I used here is for the Robert Sorby Sovereign System which are their metal handles. I use the handle for multiple tools including some gouges. I really like the system and have used it for years. I bought the kit which is also linked in the video. When I bought the kit it had high speed steel cutters instead of carbide. I stuck with the HHS cutters since they are easily sharpened. I have purchased one additional round cutter and it’s still in the packaging. RS makes carbide cutters so you can use them if you prefer. What I like most about Turnmaster is you can use a variety of different shaped cutter heads all with one tool. It can be an investment but that one tool handles many tasks! Good luck and thanks for watching!
