Gaden uke and gedan barrai are the wrong way round terminology wise. This is a problem i have at my club but keep getting told "It's what kancho calls them so that's what we call them," and it does my head in. The english translation of gedan barrai is low level or downward sweep.

Having watched some of your videos i have a question. This is not a dig at anything you are doing it is a genuine question. Why did you change some of the kata? I know your karate background, and i know that they have been changed before i just wondered the reason behind the change.
@tadashiryukaratedo4484Ай бұрын
@ThorOdinson13 I did it originally so that gkr couldn't say I was steeling their syllabus. But now I believe the changes I have made are my own twist.

@@tadashiryukaratedo4484 Just because you use the same kata, he wouldn't be able to sue as he knicked them from Goju Kai and Shotokan, with maybe the exception of 2nd kata, as Kancho is supposed to have made it up himself. I can see why you would want to change things there are plenty of things I would change if I started up my own style based on gkr.

@ThorOdinson13 that's exactly what I have done. I don't belive the words "traditional karate" exist anymore. There are so many styles developed by so many people. I changed kata because I know my mind, and my ability. Tradition to me is the etiquette and values that karate teaches, not the actual karate itself. I just had the balls to do it, rather than follow someone else which can be limit a person's mind and hinder progress. When I say progress I'm not talking grades, I'm talking the thoughts and ideas behind what a person is doing. Like when I was with gkr, I was limited to what I could teach and don't ask because the answer was always "that's what kancho wants", my mind was full of ideas but I couldn't express them. Karate ie kata, is an art form and a way of self expression, martial artist should have an open mind. I removed my limitations.

@tadashiryukaratedo44842 жыл бұрын
@@quilfrey1139 oh.... the elbow strike can and will cause more damage due to amount of pounds per square inch. The idea of a back fist is to "stun" the opponent. Plus you have more reach. Elbow strikes are perfect for up close and personal but also good for blocking. In short you are right. Here is why...... I watched some professional "breakers" on TV years ago, they tested the Elbow strike. Being hit by a car at 30mph will generate around 8-900 pounds of pressure per square inch, the round Elbow strike generated just over 1200 psi. So yes, if you can use the elbow, go for it.

Please. Keep showing these useless applications. Still make fun of practitioners, who are ignorant and stupid by continuing to see the same applications over and over and convince themselves that they are correct. But the masters of the past weren't stupid. Those of the present are, who do not know the bunkai of kata, and they invent anything to mask their ignorance.
@tadashiryukaratedo44843 жыл бұрын
These ideas are to help people understand the techniques. I never say that any of the "bunkai" works. The actual term you are looking for is "ime" that is "application" the word "bunkai" means "to break down". So inlight of what you have written I believe that I am "breaking down" the techniques so that someone watching can learn. If you want the real stuff then that would be in a class setting. Any "bunkai" that is on this channel is user friendly. I save the other stuff for class. Ie..... only my students get to go over the "ime". You may ask why this is user friendly.. well let me answer that for you. I want people to look at my videos and say "I can / want to do that", some videos I see can put people off. I don't believe martial arts should put anyone off. As for you blatant ignorance of kata "bunkai", please note that there isn't just 1 bunkai for anything. I see far too many people only showing 1 version, but the truth is that there are many bunkai for many of the techniques in karate. Basically you can allow your mind to run free. As for making fun of practitioners... I'm sorry but where I see it, I say it. The main ones I do comment on and come across are the "Americanised" people ie.. way over the top. I tell people what I see in their kata mainly. I rarely comment on bunkai. As for you reference to "those of the present are"... you have just insulted all "present" "masters".... ps, I never proclaimed to be a "master".

@@artimarzialiefitness-aless6034 I have never professed to it being real. However, my belief is that 80% of "ime" isn't useful anyway. Why? 6 months into my training and covid restrictions have only just allowed us to do full sparring practice. Today's lesson was bunkai for taigyoku shodan and nidan. I didn't see all these possibilities before, I thought it was just practice to block, strike and turn but it actually has hundreds of practical applications too... I did a kick and then sensei threw me on the floor effortlessly !! (I mean he's high grade, but it worked when I tried on him too!)
@tadashiryukaratedo44843 жыл бұрын
That's the thing about bunkai, there is more than 1. Some styles get stuck in their ways and say that "this is THE bunkai for this move". To me this limits not only the style but the student. The one thing that bunkai should do is open not only a teachers mind but the mind of the student. Whenever you think of bunkai, open your mind, remember that not all is as it seems in karate.

@@john9409 tadashi moto is "in order for self improvement we must first remove self doubt". The greatest skill in any martial art is to not fight. Take the 2 meter training and reduce the space over time. In time confidence comes, karate isn't a sprint, it's a marathon. Take time to practice and build up a level of skill. Anyone can hit another person and hurt them, the true skill is "San do mae" (forgive the spelling) it means skin touch. Having thr choice to hold back or follow through. Work on skill ie technique. I became very dissolutioned with the business and to a point the karate. I left and decided to take what I know, what I have seen and also add my own parts to kata and make Tadashi. I don't believe there is 1 style that is "traditional" due to many styles of karate. You could say because what I have done, I have followed traditional. Ie branching off and making my own.
