I was a young Aussie girl when this game out. I found it terrifying and heartbreaking seeing this movie. It held the looking glass up to some areas of Māori society and was pretty confronting. Great performance by all the actors.

I never cried so much watching this movie. It's so powerful and moving that so many people can relate to it. I do recommend watching, I love Maori people, I love them to death, but this movie is so moving and very heartfelt, but it's also quite intense to watch as well, especially if people have been through what this movie shows. Either way I love this movie. ❤ make sure you got tissues ready.

This is one of my all time favourite movies. I saw it too young, unsure really of what I was going to see. I have seen it a hundred times. And still, to this day 30yrs later, just the recap of Grace and her scenes, has me in tears. Once Were Warriors is the most powerful movie I have ever seen. It fully encapsulated the good (and beautiful, unique, special), the bad, and the ugly of the Maori population, particularly of the poorer areas. I am white, but I grew up poor and in a very large and extended Maori family from age 2 when my dad met my (ex) step mother. There wasn’t regular physical violence domestic violence toward women that I saw, but it did occur. And my parents were good friends with MM, and I would see treatment of women there, that was not ok. There was definitely all aspects of this movie otherwise, with the family growing up in the Waikato and Taranaki. It was a hard life, for adults and children alike. But there was also a sense of village and community and a kind of love, that doesn’t exist in the white community. It was a unique childhood, and it was very painful, but I wouldn’t change it. I think it is hard to put a label on this movie and wrap it up as it does provoke stereotypes and a very negative view of (particularly the poor) Maori. Unfortunately it is true. As in all cultures there is a dark underbelly, and some people experience it. All in all this movie, and all of the actors in it, are phenomenal, and brave making it. I can see why you wouldn’t. It’s a hard and horrible truth. It’s not the whole truth, but it is a part of it. Rena, you deserved every award.

That was just a film. The mana of maoris nowdays is way better. News 24 headline: "Shock over Maori infant brutality" They have been scalded, burned with cigarettes, raped, had bones broken and been beaten unconscious, sometimes to death. Horrific cases of Maori youngsters - some under two years of age - being tortured, abused and KILLED BY MEMBERS OF THEIR OWN FAMILIES Among the grisly headlines that have dominated the nation's media over recent weeks are stories of a 28-month-old Maori girl in a coma after suffering severe head injuries, a broken arm, cuts, bruises and cigarette burns over most of her body. The toddler's 52-year-old grandmother was being held in prison on assault charges. Police in the central North Island town of Carterton are investigating the death a week ago of 23-month-old Maori girl Hinewaoriki Karaitiana-Matiaha who was sexually abused, scalded with hot liquid and beaten before being taken to hospital by relatives. The child, who was put in the care of her grandmother by the Child, Youth and Family Service after consultations with the toddler's family just short of her second birthday, was dead on arrival at Masterton Hospital late on Sunday, July 23. And last week, a coroner in the east coast town of Tauranga found that two-month-old Marcus Te Hira Grey died from a brain haemorrhage following a severe beating by his father. These cases follow the recent release of a report into the gruesome killing last April of four-year-old James Whakaruru, beaten to death by his stepfather for failing to call him Dad. The stepfather had been jailed once for assaulting the boy, but the youngster endured a lifetime of horrific beatings, despite being under the eye of various child welfare agencies, and his hellish existence went unnoticed. The proportion of extreme cases of brutality towards children among the Maori population - which makes up about 15 percent of New Zealand's 3.8 million citizens - is far higher than for any other ethnic group.

One of the my favourite of all time. I remember seeing it when it was released on video in Ireland when I was a teenager. Watching it again 30 years later as an adult/husband/father it hits so much harder. Such an emotional roller coaster, timeless classic and artistic masterpiece. Huge thanks and respect to all involved. ❤
