Hello, I tried this week to do the same. Although the result is a poor sounding piece of wood. I took one of my mouthpiece as an example and I realised that I can fit a 12mm drill bit from the top of the chamber to the 16mm throat (?) they make an angle of 70 degrees. Next time I am in front of a milling machine I will try to drill that way. Thanks for this really nice video.

How do you go about designing the mouthpieces in CAD?
@spencerbrodhead26 күн бұрын
Lots of careful measuring and a strong foundation with complex shapes in cad, saxophone mouthpieces are very complicated shapes to properly model

Thanks, I didn't plan to post the stls as of now, there is a bit of post processing like sanding and gluing the main orange and white pieces together and filing the inside of the sliding piece to get it to fit properly, maybe I will in the future if I come up with a design that's more user friendly after printing

"Our tip opening right now is ZERO thousandths of an inch... so fairly closed..." LMAO. Um, you know if you work over the same spot on sandpaper, you are now using a clogged abrasive surface that isn't even? Did you do that just because you were making very rough cuts?
@spencerbrodheadАй бұрын
After pulling mouthpieces across pieces of sandpaper between 30,000 and 40,000 times I have in fact become aware how sandpaper works. I assume you're talking about 8:40 when I'm carving open the tip from nothing with rough sandpaper. Take note at 14:40 and 18:00, at no point in this video did I overuse any clogged part of the sandpaper.

Well just to be realistic if you're not already very proficient at mouthpiece refacing there's no way you'll be able to attempt a project like this, I would recommend getting some cheap clarinet mouthpieces and practice working on them first to see how that goes.

We had had some correspondence quite some back concerning dimensions of mouthpieces and method of making these. One of the most difficult parts of the making process is the carving out or shaping of the interior of the mouthpiece. I have since our exchange made many mouthpiece of varying chamber sizes using just plain hand tools. I do not have video making equipment but could gladly send you a series of photos of each stage of the making process. I do not know if the Comments section would accept photos but I know that email would so if you so desire I could send you these on receipt of your email address.

I have 4 years of machine shop experience, 60 years of pro sax experience and would have no idea how to "make a mouthpiece." Baffle height seems to make the biggest difference to me. I believe higher means easy blowing and brighter?

Great Job! My friend gave me something like this, but it's made from teak wood. I loved that tone and it's give me different feeling whenever I play. It's kinda dark, big tone (since its low baffle & large chamber), and the upper register doesn't as bright as the other mouthpiece. Unfortunately the condition now is not good anymore, especially the tip & the side rails. When I saw this video, it's just remind me that every natural process is unique but it has own limited best days to perform. I hope I can replace mine with the same model, but my friend was stop producing it :(
@spencerbrodhead6 ай бұрын
Ah very cool! Yeah wood over time can warp and swell, which is what you noticed in the tip and rails, which of course have critical geometries for the mouthpiece to play properly, also the warping over time can cause the table to not be flat which causes all sorts of issues. Being made of teak wood it probably looks great still, should make a nice looking display piece!

first the super glue is toxic, how did you come up with this idea and why? second, my feeling is that the wood you use (Walnut if I'm right) is not really good for anything that comes in touch with the moisture and it does in the mouth a lot.. Well I see it is White Oak which is better speaking of the moisture but it will burn in the mouth.. not even hammer handle is made for that reason from that, as it kinda burns your skin. Its open texture is quite problematic for such use. If you ask me if the sound will be noticeably different. I would say, sure it will, as the geometry is what matters the most in this case and hand made piece like that will not have a good geometry..
@spencerbrodhead7 ай бұрын
Hmm ok that was a lot of inaccurate things you just said. Super glue toxicity is really referring to breathing in the fumes white its liquid or during the drying process, or directly ingesting it. I did neither. Read the description. White oak does not burn the mouth, I play tested it before the super glue a couple of times... no burn. Wow, science. The problem with it is that is swells with moisture which I cover in the video which is why I sealed the surface. "If you ask me if the sound will be noticeably different" Well I didn't ask you and the sound would not noticeably be different. "hand made piece like that will not have a good geometry" Wrong. A handmade piece like this has proper geometry because I'm a professional mouthpiece maker and I know what I'm doing. Watch the video, listen to how it sounds like a mouthpiece that's functioning properly. Overall, any problems people come up with that they think this piece might have don't matter at all because this was just an experiment piece that I will never actually play for real. Thanks for your input.

Thanks! I use Formax brand buffing compound, for hard rubber the first stage of polishing I would recommend the brown tripoli (or the black bar), and then the light blue bar for the final high gloss polish

Spencer, thank you for this video! I acquired two noname mouthpieces form 20s made from a grenadilla wood.. and wood is so unstable, so when try to play it after a reface i notice a table warping.. it screws the whole job out.. now i know what to do with a super glue))))
@spencerbrodhead9 ай бұрын
Thanks! I'm glad you like the video, I actually would not reccomdend putting superglue on a grenadilla piece, especailly one that you plan on using. I just did this to seal in this piece for the few times I would play it, because white oak is a lot softer than grenadilla and I was noticing swelling of the wood right away.
