I just got back from HHI and found your video. The dr that I went to to get prescription ointment said it was a sea nettle, I was like "yeah I don't think so." i felt like I was constantly getting shocked by a taser for about 36 hours. Now it's just bumps, swollenness, itchiness and burning. They found man-o-wars on HHI a few weeks back, so I'm confident that's what it was.

Man - I have this exact rash. Trying to figure it out. Was off Jensen Beach FL - east coast also - and I felt a VERY intense sting on my chest. VERY intense. Like a fire poker was twisted. After about 20 mins it backed down to just severe itching with light burning. Was a light red rash. I washed it. Put chlorhexidine on it - and hydrocortisone. Day 2 (yesterday) - the bumps solidified. Now it's day 3 - and it's super itchy and hard - and bright in color. But my skin welts look just like yours. I did feel something slimy run across me for a second when it happened - but not much contact. Hoping my chest doesn't balloon up like your leg. I'm taking pred to make sure I don't over inflame. UGGH.

I once got caught in a school of 500+ Sea Nettles while I was snorkeling. I got stung 4 times on my arms and they are just like large raised bumps that burned for a bit. Sea Nettles do sting but it goes away quickly. That rash looked like something else completely, never seen a reaction like that.

How did it end up recovering?
@BHarrisDesign

It was an interesting experience. It hurt a lot for the first 2 days after the string, but then began to fade. A week to th day after the sting, I woke up with my leg swelled up like a balloon and it itched like crazy and blistered progressively over the next week. Then, it all faded and I recovered. A year later, almost to the day, my leg swelled up a little bit and was itchy again, but no blistering or marks were present. I was slightly swollen and itchy for 2 days, then went away. I've not had any issues since, and have no visible scarring. In hindsight, it was probably not a sea nettle, but I have no other indication what it might have been.

Brian Harris thank you so much for relying! I had my first day at Hilton Head today! 20 minutes of being in the water I got stung. Not gonna lie, the pain is one thing, but I’m paranoid it’s going to scar. The tentacles wrapped around my ankle and I have to say it looks pretty gnarly. As an rn I was a little frustrated with the lack of consensus on how to treat these wounds.

@@Michelle-bl8sz Sorry to hear that you were stung, too. I hope that yours does not flare up again like mine did, but if it does, I have two recommendations that worked well for me. First- The itching the week after the sting was the worst I've ever experienced... more than any sort of poison ivy or even chicken pox as a child. The only thing that gave relief was to run the affected area under the hottest water I could stand for 30-60 seconds. This makes it itch miserably, but only for a short duration before the itching subsides. You get maybe 2-4 hours of relief from doing this, so it helps immensely, especially with getting to sleep. The second thing was that the swelling and blistering was greatly relieved by filling a kitchen-sized trash can with cold water and ice. I would often do the hot water part, followed by cold ice water, relieving the itch and reducing the swelling one after the other. I did my very best not to scratch at it, which I assumed greatly reduced my chance of any scarring. As an RN, you probably know a little better what might work, but that's what I found was effective for me over creams, etc! Best of luck!

Brian Harris this was SO helpful! Like I said even as an RN I could not find consistent guidelines on how to treat the wound. I will definitely take your advice to heart. I have autoimmune issues and I wonder if that’s why my reaction was more severe than the average person’s. It was definitely a nettle and it looks like yours did in this video. I can’t thank you enough for responding with this info, I feel a lot more reassured just to know a while out you were able to manage the pain and not scar.

I've been stung by sea nettles before, they are all over the bay here in NJ. I never had a reaction that bad, I don't think that was a sea nettle, however everyone's reaction to jellyfish stings is different just like bee/wasp stings so who knows. If that ever happens again white vinegar works wonders.

It’s actually longitudinally mounted. Most v-twin bikes have transverse engines. Crankshaft in line with the centerline of the vehicle is longitudinal. Think front wheel drive car(most) is transverse. Pickup trucks are longitudinal.

Yes, quite expensive. High speed cameras like this one generally are $50,000-$400,000+. This camera was/is owned by the company I work for. We use it regularly for product analysis, which is why we can justify the cost. For the everyday consumer or someone just interested in seeing how life works in slow-motion, these are NOT a good option. A lot of thing can be done with cheaper cameras though. Try searching "Twixtor" and check out cameras that shoot in the 100-500fps range.

The flight itself is/was only around an hour and a half, and the driving afterward was around 2 hours (I cut a considerable amount of driving out for the video... it was just a little too boring). The battery lasted a bit over 4 hours, if I recall correctly.
