If you had the same speakers as your front mains as surrounds, won't the lower cones be quite obscured by the arms of the seats anyway? So from that pov maybe you got the correct speakers as surrounds. Also I am no pro but maybe the surrounds backs should be raised slightly? Only asking what you think. Btw I loved alien romulant. It was surprisingly good.. but I agree they always asked crazy prices for this stuff. But it's getting worse tbh.

Definitely recommend bass traps. They made a huge difference in my room. Especially after switching to the big 18's and 24's. Along with all the good came room rattles and reverberations which I cant stand. And even with it EQ'd at my seats the peaks in other areas of the room could be heard. So they made a huge difference in that regard. When you rip out that back wall you can put the new one up like a foot off the back, and put nice sized traps behind them. They don't have to be pretty since you won't see them. Probably behind the screen too. I did some 4" treatment on the ceiling also but not sure those really did anything.

A suggestion why not have your calibrator check in room Revelation Time using REW and then make the correct educated decisions before adjusting the acoustic treatment. You may see in the measurements that you need thicker/multi stacked panels to treat the correct areas or maybe not do anything at all.

Are you finding an extreme benefit with the angles in ceiling? I just purchased some regular in ceiling and have not installed, wondering if Atmos should be directional or diffused like the dipole surrounds. Yes you lose directionality but what percent are better? Don’t let any marketing change your choice of speakers. The tech hasn’t changed much and the details in the install choices are more important than speaker brand.

Noise floor help! Even though I'm an avid 2 channel stereo music lover, I also love the occasional movie, too, and due to lack of space, I have to optimise my setup for multi-channel listening also. However, when it came listening to my newly discovered multi-channel setup (4 years ago), I immediately became aware of how the room sounded different. Didn't know what it was at first, but coming from an audio black background, there was no way I was prepared to put up with it! Even after auditioning 3 separate AVR's, the same electrical ambient sound of the room was still present! That told me the extremely faint background signal noise I had been experiencing (poor description) had nothing to do with the actual units. Therefore, my attention changed to the cables. And even then It was only on the third occasion after I finally ended up purchasing shielded cables that the noise floor within my small room finally came down to satisfactory levels. Cables often act as antennas for attracting RF, and the longer the cable, the better the antenna. Probably explains why when I used to disconnect my heights and surrounds within 10 minutes, the faint background signal noise (RF/EMI) within my small room used to almost practically disappear/dissipate The more cables I shield, the quieter my room becomes, and the better the shielding, the more the cables are likely to disappear. In fact, the last group of cables I changed were from my HDMI's and lo and behold the room became slightly quieter yet again. If one has the same sensitivities and is looking to address this matter, but is also hoping to notice (hear) the incremental differences, I would suggest starting with analogue cables before moving on to digital and power cables (no good getting rid of the quietest when one hasn't addressed the noisiest) Trying to achieve a totally silent room sadly has turned into obsession for me. However, the results speak for themselves. There are times when pressing pause (or mute), I'm unable to differentiate whether the systems off or whether the systems actually switched on. Of course, audiophile equipment helps, but in reality when it comes to a multi-channel setup and when we're sitting in the MLP it's actually the interference coming off the cables that's actually going to be adding to the noise floor, especially with Atmos channels with their extended cable lengths. Please don't think I'm referring to cross cable contamination, say, with like power cables, for example. Put it to the test. Watch a movie for at least 10 minutes, then press pause and sit and listen. Now you're aware just how loud the noise floor actually is... turn the system off and disconnect the height and surround channels and repeat the process. Then you should hear just how much the noise floor has come down, but remember it can take up the 5-10 minutes for the interference to build up and to dissipate so when testing, give it 10 minutes. If you're impressed with the results, I'd be more than happy to recommend the necessary cables, and they don't necessarily have to be expensive either.
