I do not know what the original writers of this piece intended it to look like, but I hope it wasn't this. They are supposed to be pirates and they are dancing like ballerinas. Some parts appear to be Irish step dancing.

You must have seen some pretty awful ballet if you think this is what that looks like. 🤣
@MrYfrank1411 күн бұрын
@sKid-gh9ub - I didn't say it was good ballet. The dance moves are ballet.

It’s very uncanny that instead of the captions saying Peep Peep,it says Beep Beep! Only buses go beep,not Steam Trains!
@sKid-gh9ubАй бұрын
I would say the makers of these subtitles aren't all that familiar with the books. It's an understandable error, but of course, to us Thomas fans, it's very frustrating.

In 1966 I played Strephon in a high school G&S performance of Iolanthe. Still remember the songs and in this song, "scrape scrape" was the director's call on our foot movement. Met my first girlfriend on the set...what wonderful memories for this now 75yr old.

The best part of the aria is the encore of “Come friends who plow the sea…”. I love how Gilbert and Sullivan made Pirates into official Rock n Roll before the genesis of Rock n Roll and Johnny Depp and Jerry Bruckheimer came into adapting Walt Disney’s classic Pirates of the Caribbean to a rock n roll franchise, but Gilbert and Sullivan (feel free to judge me) were the first to make pirates pillage and plundering towns for fun. My favorite songwriting duo ever.

Splendid! SPLENDID! *S*P*L*E*N*D*I*D*!!! SPLENDIFEROUS! WHAT a splendid Bunthorne! Such a marvelous send-up of Oscar Wilde! Sullivan's music is fine, but Gilbert was the true genius of the operas; I don't think WSG gets nearly as much credit as he deserves for his very acute (and often biting) satire. He's my hero!

I DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO love this! I sing it to myself (VERY badly, and ONLY when I'm alone!) at the merest suggestion that a hat will be dropped . . . to paraphrase someone in "The Importance of Being Earnest", I don't sing well, ANYONE can sing well; I sing with wonderful expression.

Wonderful glory days of Australian Opera. Almost a completely repertory company, these young singers were given a great start in stunning productions of Mozart or, as here, in G&S, before moving to the big opera roles. These are not ballet dancers, but classical singers! Astounding dance routine.

The two Gondolier kings David Hobson and Roger Lemke went on to star as Rodolfo and Marcello in Baz Luhmann's groundbreaking La Boheme in Sydney in 1990 , which went on to be the only opera production to conquer Broadway in New York, as far as I know and which set up Luhrmann's career of highly romantic classic operas, plays and films.
