Your thermostat isn't hot so will be closed so flow will only mainly come out of one of the outlets. You need to remove the thermostat when flushing or the flow won't go all around the engine block and cylinder head.

You need the correct exhaust riser. (I have this engine) you can get a VP riser or an aftermarket Stainless one, both have some connections. The pipe coming out of the thermostat housing will go to this exhaust riser. The pipe coming out of the engine (near the air intake) will also go to this riser. If there is no water flowing out of your thermostat housing it is because the engine is not warm and the T-stat has not opened. You can remove the housing and T-Stat to test flow. However note that the gasket for this assembly is actually on the Thermostat itself, so it may leak a bit while you test that. The exhaust riser in this video is homemade (not bad necessarily) and does not have the connection points in the correct locations. Cooling water comes in from the sea, through the gear box, and THEN to the pump suction side.

A lot of the internal debris in the waterpassages is probably scale from the water rather than corroded cast iron.

Hey, thanks for the video! I am trying to fix mine but on mine it seems like there is a part missing on the cover that is a part of the carborator. It is a small hole straight into the plastic cylinder part where all the gas is dripping out. On yours it seems like there is some kind of ventil... it is located centered under the front cover, do you know what that could be? Feeling lost as there is no such part in the owners manual...

You could always empty the sump the hard way with your syringe then drill and tap a hole to suit a plug like a vehicle has. Or in the tapped hole you can fit a banjo bolt and a hyd hose thst a proper sump pump can get attatched to. Ive seen manual water pumps that are fitted to carsvans etc used and they perform just fine.

100% agree. Make sure its a decent sized hole from say M14 to M18. Common sizes so plugs and washers will be availiable at any/many auto parts stores.

You def have to move the water injection point to the position you pointed to on your exhaust riser. Where it is in the video is oh so wrong.

Thank you for the comment. It seems the exhaust is made out of a stainless steal pipe farmers would use. I will need to change it.
@matui6983
@matui6983 Жыл бұрын
The concept is fine. Material will be 316 s/s so that will work. Freshwater flushing is the best thing you can do for the exhaust and the engine. But with that riser, move the water injection pipe from where it is now to where you pointed. Much much better position. Will the rest of the pipe get hot? Yes but it looks like a big diameter pipe which will reduce backpressure. And you can always wrap the rest of the pipe before the water injection point with car header/extractor material. Will stop you getting burnt and will help in reducing engine room temperature.

I'm enjoying your series. It's a shame that engine had so much rust. I'm working on a MD7A in Virginia USA, but ran into trouble when a manifold bolt broke off inside the cylinder head, so now I have to find a way to remove the manifold. I think I know the techniques for that, but we'll see.

I bought custom bearings and rings for my engine, not factory ones. The size of the bearings was provided by the crankshaft grinding plant, similarly with the piston rings. The remade elements are not worse than the originals, apparently - we'll see.

Are the clearances too big on the original bearings? If the rings you got suit a Subaru then surely the bearings are the same as another engine made sumwhere in the world. Those little engines get rebuilt here in NZ My engine machinist is away on Xmas holidays right now but Im pretty sure he would be able to find an equivzlent diesel bearing. Put the cylinder head in Evaporust to clean it Or look on KZbin how to make your own Electrolysis cleaning tank. Easy to do and worx brilliantly. Do not at any stage beadblast or shotblast the head.

Have to be very very careful with the VA model injector pump on that engine. Extremely hard to get certain parts for them nowadays. Clean waterfree fuel is an absolute must with them more so than a standard type pump. I remove those factory saltware pumps and fit a pedastal type to remedy the issue tou have with them filling up the engine with water. Exhaust manifolds also fail due to being saltwater cooled so best thing is to fit a 3 way vslve on seawater intake so after a day out it can be closed to run the engine from a 20 litre bucket of freshwater. Also with the 3 way valve if the boat starts to fill up with saltwater you can close the valve and use the engine as a bilge pump while still motoring the boat.

I like the additional use of the engine as a bilge pump. Thank you for telling me. Can you maybe tell me where I can get hold of the big-end bearings. Without these bearings it might not be worth fixing the engine.

VA was the first model of single plunger rotary injector pump from Bosch mostly a 2 cylinder model. The following model was/is the VE type which is still being made today and has been copied all over the world in everything from 3 , 4 , 5 and 6 cylinder units.

Henk, I have the same problem that you start this video with--I'm getting gas leaking out of the carburetor. In your case, was it the shut off valve that is actuated by the carburetor float, or was it something else? My motor had not been run in 30 years, but it started right up with fresh gas. Hoping to narrow down where to look, although I plan on taking the carburetor off and cleaning it.
