I have this exact Brother model. A brand new Brother brand cartridge did not show ink in the window. I shook the cartridge gently and suddenly ink appeared in the window. The printer started working again. This video saved me from thinking I needed to buy a new printer? Thanks!!!

I'm having this issue with brand new inks bought, all inks but cyan work. after all of these methods and cleaning the sense in the printer, when i plug the ink cartridge in it says it's full forlike 3 seconds or so then says no ink detected. I tryed putting tape over, coloring it in. tried all the methods in this video. I'm going to buy another cyan hoping this cyan was a factory messup

Has anyone tried this on LC-61 or LC-65 cartridges? Do they have an optical level window? Thanks

Thank you bunches!!! Cleared the number after fully cleaning the absorber pads. It does still give the maintenance error "full" (probably did not wait till the pads were fully dry) but now it does print again. So far so good 🙂

Thank you so much for this tip. I used this on a LC421 cartridge where the window is on the top (DCP-J1050DW printer) and it also worked. I could see when I inverted the cartridge that there was still lots of ink left so definitely didn't want to throw it out. I also need to power my printer off and then back on because directly after replacing the cartridge with the covered up window, the printer put an x on all of my cartridges.

I followed your instructions to reset the counter when showing the error of Ink Box Full. On completion the message was still there so I decided to turn it off & on. Sadly it won't come back on. Any ideas please?

Hi, this is not working and i also tried to cover up window.

It worked with J4420DW but two notes: I saw "Machine error" after entering *2864 but I pressed on regardless. There are two PURGE items on the list. One PURGE alone, and another <en> PURGE. After clearing just the second I got "Ink Absorber Pad Nearly Full". Then I cleared the first, and no error messages.

I stopped using my Brother, even though it was better than it's replacement, because of the annoying warnings. Thanks for posting this.

On my MFC -J5620DW ... I developed this hack watching BROTHERs Own video haha.... kzbin.info/www/bejne/h3yoaXduZsSWi6s The black tape fix will ONLY work IF you MATCH THE SIZE of the tape to that little vane you see in the cartridge ink window when you hold it upside down, about 3/16 square. Stick the tape on the ink cart window exactly where that vane is. The damn printer looks at not only the vane, BUT ALSO the semi-transparent area surrounding the vane, If it looks ALL black it thinks you have a 3rd party cart and perpetually says "Reseat Cartridge" WHAT A PIECE OF JUNK. ****BUT**** This fools it's little 'manufacturer rip the customer' brain so you CAN USE IT on your Grayscale ! You should ALSO set your printer defaults to GRAYSCALE....

I wish Brother would simply release a firmware update that resolves this bug / issue. In my case it occurs because I don’t leave the printer constantly in stand-by. I power it off (at the printer). When I return a few weeks later to use it again, I always have to do this hard reboot described in your video. It’s a glitch in the printer’s power management software.

Help! I replaced the ink absorber by following your great instructions…however, the printer screen says “! Cover is Open. Can I remedy this?

Thank you for the video showing how to change the filter on our Brother J4420DW, mine looks identical to yours, but is not going to the same place after I punch in "*2864. Mine doesn't go to "maintenance", instead it goes to "Error46" at the top. And while I can use the over arrows to get the window with the up arrows, hitting the up arrows only results in the error beep because of the Error46 code. Basically it has me in a logical circle not letting me reset error46 because of error46. Any help would be appreciated.

This is the only thing that worked for my DCP-J4120DW. I followed your other video where you remove all the cartridges and replace one by one. That was working, installed C,M,Y, and then when I install K, it says can't detect C and M. Remove K, and can't detect K. Install K - can't detect C and M. Infuriating! Thanks for the fix :)
