Their reaction to their hands holding was the kind of reaction you write for a potential romantic relationship, not friendship. If it were just friendship they both would be annoyed not surprised and panicked as if they were scared to the touch because It made them feel something.

I don't know if this is a hot take or not, but I don't really think Steve had a crush on Robin, and I definitely don't believe that he fell in love with her, romantically speaking. I think Steve has had a jumbled idea of love for most of the series. I think he said that he thinks his dad's been cheating on his mom for years and that alone makes having a healthy idea of love difficult. And then there's Nancy, who he genuinely fell in love with and genuinely believed she loved him back, but was then told that their entire relationship was bullshit. Which also can fuck up your ideas of love all on its own. See Steve wholeheartedly advising Dustin to not fall in love bc "all it's gonna do is break your heart and you're way too young for that shit." I say all this because after that combo, Dustin was able to get into Steve's head about his love life, and he firmly stated Robin as the perfect girl for Steve(his suzie), and tried to imply that they had a crush on each other. And the scene of them on the ground where Robin phrased her envy of Steve like a crush probably didn't help much either tbh. But also Robin wasn't certain that Steve would live to see another person who wouldn't want to hurt him, much less love him as he is. So I think that what led Steve to think his feeling for Robin were romantic. Sure it feels different than when he had feeling for Nancy, but it's probably better that he doesn't feel those feelings towards Robin. Another that adds to this idea for me was that Steve was so easily okay with being just friends with Robin. There was no pain of rejection on his face as Steve put the pieces together, and he turned it around so quickly too. Sure he was getting rejected by girls all summer, but that was flirting, not a confession. I think Steve's only thoughts about his relationship with Robin in that 30 seconds was something like "I don't think I actually want to date Robin. Just being friends sounds like a better time actually." All in all, I'd die for platonic soulmates Steve and Robin and thinking of the other romantically would be confusing for them.

I love the idea this show presented here. That sometimes what you need most is a friend, not a girlfriend. That not everything is fixed by getting into a romantic relationship. That friendships are just as important and life changing as relationships.
