These rules never come into play unless you are racing or in a crowded hatbor. Even then, if you meet a power boat you darn well better know the international rules. If you guess wrong you will be liable.

At 2:40 - It might be confusing to some: both boats on the same tack, the leeward (close hauled) boat is the "stand on" boat and the windward (reaching) boat must steer to avoid. The leeward boat can hail a warning of "CLOSE HAULED!" or "LEEWARD BOAT!" to confirm its intention to stand on. Great graphics, well done.

Nit-picking. A sailboat is on a starboard tack when its mainsail is on the port side of the boat, regardless of which direction the wind is coming over the boat. Conversely, a sailboat is on a port tack when its mainsail is no the starboard side of the boat. (That is the definition in the ColRegs. 99% + of the time, a boat on a starboard tack will have the wind coming over the starboard side of the boat but a boat can be on a starboard tack, running, with the wind coming over the port side.)

Just adding confusion to another, why making the port side in the right hand side?????? Who do you think is going to watch this video if it is not a Beginner who's already confused about such misleadings between port and strbrd? Do you think people who are familiar with sailing will watch you piece of crap? You wasted everyone's time DH

At 2:18 can the red boat avoid the green boat by changing course to the green boat's starboard side? At the beginning they both boats are sailing directly towards each other.

Great notepad for outdoor sports in the winter. I am a freelance sport photographer, and always use one for football soccer etc and it works well in the pouring rain to make notes, Highly recommend pad. I use ordinary HB pencils on this pad.

Seems over complicated. Why not just say the boat on your port, (en route to a port collision) or on the non wind side, has the right of way?
@gertsy2000 Жыл бұрын
Because that's not the case. If the boat to your port side is on a port tack, and you are on starboard tack, you are the stand on boat and the other boat must give way.

On the West Coast of the US outside Los Angeles Harbor the creep of pots is on as well; couple of miles off Angels' Gate breakwall now and crowding right up to the big ship traffic lanes. Bright colors? Nah... blue or white and disappearing beneath the chop and the swell. Sailing engineless as I do with full keel/rudder certainly has it's challenges but does make for a less stressful sail where there are so many dang pots! Really enjoying your channel Cap! Thank you🤟🏻🤟🏻

Just give way to your port or down wind side. If you think you will eventually collide, turn to starboard. You will likely never be so close you have to make a spit decision.

Yes indeedy great tip and if it's a fishing boat heading towards you, regardless if you're stand on, you'd better watch him like a hawk and take evasive action early, even if you do a 720. Found this out off Newhaven several weeks ago. They must have been having breakfast with the Labrador left alone in the wheelhouse....maybe be barked because one came up and gave us a friendly wave!

The problem I have found is that if you pass it round the winch too often you can get a riding turn so you then cannot release it. I am doing something wrong but not sure what.
@jeffhodge73335 жыл бұрын
When you wrap a line around a winch, you do it in a clockwise manner starting at the bottom of the winch. As you wrap, you put in a half twist with each wrap, which keeps kinks out of the line. It's the same principle behind using a figure-eight pattern as you coil long lines for storage. It keeps out the kinks for easy uncoiling. You can find a youtube video on how to wrap winches. Use both hands to do it correctly.
@jakelyall71804 жыл бұрын
Some winch / block setups make this more likely. You want the line to lead straight or slightly downwards from the winch - it may be worth building in a wedge under the winch.

At 1:50,wt if port boat is coming from starboad side,who is giveway and why
@DrumminDrew05 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I don't agree with that. At night all you have to go on are port/starboard lights. The green boat would be in the red boats red/danger zone and therefore have to give way to avoid the red boat. At least that's what the USCGA taught me.
@cianclancy36845 жыл бұрын
If both boats are on the same tack, then the boat to windward is the give way vessel. In this example, if the boat at the bottom was on a starboard tack instead, the boat running downwind must keep out of the way. Per the colregs, if you cannot determine what tack the other boat is on (say if you can't see the main sail, or at night), you must give way.
@robhill88944 жыл бұрын
@@DrumminDrew0 Just give way to port or the down wind side. Regardless of light color, you can see what direction they're going.

I've got the first edition (1997) and 21 years ago I used Gavin's spinnaker wrap tip. I can vouch for the fact that it works! Lots of good tips in his A-Z list of skills... from anchoring to whales and windage. There aren't many good books on multihull sailing by writers with such in-depth experience. It deserves a place on your bookshelf.
