Uhmmm. I think it looked better with the slightly blackened look. After you burned it to a crisp it just looks like hell

Can you use any kind of paver on top of these base panels, like interlocking flagstone types?

looks like you got a good result, I have just done my first couple of logs. I thought about using a ladder for my first cut, in the end i made a frame from angle iron, gave me more options.

Bales lose water quite fast and NEED to be blocked from wind as much as possible..so by adding a simple cloth to the side can block wind and sun to permit more slow evaporation without extra heat. Straw is easy in water but also easy out water so just shade alone makes a difference and so planting near to shade the bales or a row of pots with something in them... simple stuff can shelter the bales and get more water for the job and less time watering or amount of water in automatic watering too. wind sun and how to just stop that add a lot of water to the plants.

I'm on my 7th year of straw bale gardening this season. I am now on tarps for weed reduction (the online source that sells former advertising banners) and it really makes life easier. Also, I went with drip irrigation, with a hose wand as an auxiliary for dry periods. Half-inch for long runs, 1/4-inch to each plant with a 1-gallon/hour emitter. I only use my bales for a year because they are pretty messy at the end of the season. As you mentioned, quality of bales varies a lot. This year they are tight and square. Last year the garden did not do well because it was a very wet season. Not disastrous, but just not the success I've had in the past. No trellises, just heavy-duty tomato cages. I'll never go back to dirt.

I'm going to guess the timber dimensions are 6"x8" based on the Skillsaw he is using. It has a max cut of 6 1/4" if I'm not mistaken. 0:50

I have been conditioning my straw bales. I'm on day 10 and we have had alot of rain these last few days. My straw bales have TINY RED BUGS ALL OVER THEM! WHAT DO I DO NOW???

Hi, I also am from central Ontario, zone 3-4. My question is that I have several round straw bales that have been outside for about 2 years already. They are still intact. I would like to plant them with strawberries, but do I need to condition them?, because there is already good decomposition inside the bales. I would hope to be able to use them over several years. Thank you, I am enjoying these videos, and can't wait to try straw bale gardening.

Do you source the stone already cut? Or are you cutting on site to fit whatever needs you need? Specifically for the smaller stones. Understandably, the window sills, you need to customize as you go. :D

Hi I have a question for you if you wouldn't mind helping. I bought the stihl 881 magnum and a 72" grandberg complete kit. I cannot get the bar on the tension pin on the saw head when the helper handle is on the end. It's way off. If it does go on there's absolutely no play for loosen or tighten any slack and the bar would be rubbing the helper handle sprocket wheel which won't let it spin. Do you think there is a different bar for my saw? Seems like it needs 3 more chain links to work. Totally lost on this. Emailed grandberg and haven't heard back yet. Thanks in advance

This is great! I’m in Ontario Canada ..zone 4…and I did straw bale gardening last year. I had great success with a lot of stuff. I’m going to use the bales again and hopefully it works out. I used tomato cages for a lot of the stuff because I still have a bunch of them. I did trellis my peas. Much easier on the back for planting and picking. Love gardening. Thanks for the video. Always love getting new ideas.

I’m about to buy some 12 foot hickory slabs for 80$ each. Need a way to to dry them. Parents also have 50 acres so might build an Alaska mill to try and get some wood out of their fallen trees. How long would this type of kiln take to dry out big slabs?

We were doing the same thing yesterday. I usually dread milling stickers but once the process gets going it isn't that horrible 🤣 We usually use white pine but more recently switched to cherry.

I was imagining that the addition of the straw to my clay-ish soil was going to be helpful. Thanks for confirming. Some people use straw to smother weeds. Since you are going to have a lot of straw in the next few years, why not smother the weeds at least in the pathways, if not the beds themselves. As a no-dig, (low dig) type method, something to consider to save yourself some work. :-)

Im in the process of mounting my new 6.5" vise right now. My work bench table is no where near as beefy as yours. I am mounting my vise on 1/4" 8x8 steel plate with 1/4" flat bar under the table for the front bolts to go through for additional support. Should work good.

still working on it too... I'll be removing a link on my 60" chain and believe there'll still be enough travel to get the chain on. I'll pay more attention over the next couple milling sessions and report back in the future.. Cheers!

@@WorkshopatTheGardens thought the same thing. How many links do you start with or are down to? I think it is 185 links but running out of chain tension.
