Thank you for this excellent advice. I have one question - what do you use to colour the C and F pegs and strings? Coming from the harp, I really need this on the lyre that I just bought.
@learningthelyreharpКүн бұрын
I used a very thin coat of good nail polish on the tips of the tuning peg as down a very small section of the very top of the strings. Some folks have used sharpies. I have not so I don’t know how effective that is. I have also used round gem stickers on one of my lyres right below the C & F strings. This was very helpful for me in the beginning, but in time, with much playing, I tend to rely more on the sounds each string make and I’ve gotten used to judging the strings especially on smaller lyres.

Thank you so much Sharon for making this video. I'm thinking of buying this type of lyre harp, I live in an apartment and a big, proper harp would probably be too loud to practice on. It's great that you run through all the octaves, this will be so helpful when tuning up!

Thank you so much Sharon, this video is so helpful as I was wondering what is the most comfortable way to play this beautiful little instrument. Mine is a 16 string lyre that has the rounded end pointing away from the body so it's a bit easier to hold. I'm so glad I found your channel and I'm very excited to learn to play. Yes. Dorian mode uses the same notes as the Ionian. We just moved the tonic to the second note and build the melody/chord structure from there.

You have a great resource, but I would advise against calling it a lyre harp. Most sites that do drop shipping have tons of clone listings that try to maximize exposure in search results, so you'll wrongfully see lyre & harp together. It's so annoying how mass production companies perpetuate misinformation. Having played the harp myself, the major difference is construction: lyres have bridges, harps don't. Lyres share more in common with the guitar, as it does predate both the guitar & harp. Lyre Academy expounds on how ancient techniques treated the lyre like both a guitar, down to using a pick. Funnily enough, I initially thought that a lyre would be very easy to pick up because of harp experience. But the more I get into it, the more I see that guitar experience would translate better. There is a design that fuses the harp spine inspiration with a lyre bridge, but ultimately it's still a lyre.

Thanks for sharing your expertise. “Lyre harps” was already the established term/name for diatonic modern lyres when I first started playing it. These instruments and those looking to learn them were so scorned and belittled when they were looking for groups to help them learn. The historical lyre and chromatic lyre communities refused to acknowledge these as lyres, even though they were. Description Listings for these were already set up as harp and that is nothing I can control, change or correct. The purpose of the resources I created is to provide support and a safe place for those looking to play and not to change anyone’s pre existing views. I started with the harp, and this channel was originally for that, but lyre has taken over because so many folks from our Facebook group were needing help. Lyres come in different shapes, forms, styles, strings and playing styles. What works with playing historical lyres may not be the option for another or the preferred method for some. I understand how strongly you feel that these are still only lyres. No one from our group is claiming these as anything but lyres. I tried to get everyone moved to diatonic lyres but “Lyre Harps” was already established long before I started playing everyone including the existing lyre communities called them this to differentiate between historical types and chromatic ones. Apologies that this has caused you some frustration it did me at the beginning as well. It takes a lot to change the norm and pre-existing thoughts and views. I am only looking to keep my word to create enough resources to help others and give them a safe place. Diatonic lyres have seen a bit more support with new teachers and new resources and am happy with the progress of the community. Thank you 🙏

Hi. this compare to molin, or others, which one sound conford
@learningthelyreharp29 күн бұрын
Most of the mass produced lyres sound the same ,based on type, because they are made of the same materials. I like the Cega and Aklot brands better than the Molin brand because I have not had any issues with them. My Molin lyre is poorly made and it won't keep tune. I've tried to fix it many times but the wood quality is just so bad that the pins won't stay put. Hope this helps.

@@stephenstephen74 They are pretty much the same. I find that the larger lyres are warmer because they have more resonance having a larger body but it isn't by much because they are made of the same materials.

What is the best one in terms on holding tune? For all the lyre players out there?
@learningthelyreharpАй бұрын
The best one to hold tune would be a luthier hand made lyres. Mass produced lyres are a bit of a hit and miss. My Aklot and Cega lyre still holds tune and no issues at all to this date, but others have had issues and had to get replacements. The crystal lyre also keeps tune. Molin lyre is not one that I would personally buy again or recommend. From feedback with many folks these do not stay in tune. Hope this helps.

Thank you! I’m partially bed ridden and looking for hobbies I can do whilst lying down. And the lyre looks perfect! I was debating between the 7 & 16 string lyre. I’d love to play anything from Celtic folk songs all the way to classical and Spanish music or anything I think of frankly lol. I appreciate your advice about the 7 string lyre, I feel like it would get boring or frustrating because of its lack of range. So I’m gonna go with the 16 string. Thank you! I don’t have a lot of music experience, a bit of guitar but it’s hard for me to play because of my health. I can’t read music or know music theory. But I appreciate that each string only has one note unlike a guitar which has like 20 frets per string 🤮 lol. Each string only having one note makes the lyre much less intimidating. Even with 16 strings! Which is really nice!

@learningthelyreharp2 ай бұрын
It depends on your reason to play as well as the type of songs you are looking to play. If you’re wanting to play solely for meditation and stress relief then pentatonic 7 strings is great. But if you are looking to play written melodies like hymns and popular songs the minimum strings would be 16.

Good day ma'am. I have a Molin 24 string hollow lyre harp but it's intended for left-handed players. Just curious, is your Molin the same or is it for right-handed players? I'm considering buying a 19 string Walter T so that I can play with my dominant hand. I can play my Molin just fine, it's just that, sometimes I cannot hit the strings precisely and I want to be able to play smoothly.
