Hello everyone, We need to stop blaming one another. This is a trap set for us. Many people that claim to be able to speak on this topic, do not have the whole picture. Yes, before the slave trade brought slaves from Africa to America, there was a form of servitude by which some kings and their dignitaries “own” servants that can be considered their slaves. It is worth noting however that, though some of these kings and their dignitaries did participate in the trade selling some of their own slaves to the Europeans merchants, their portion was relatively small, as they themselves needed the manpower to attend to their own needs. The Europeans slave merchants had their own teams with which they went around the continent kidnapping people they came across, and the big majority of the African slaves brought to America were acquired through that direct kidnapping. These merchants were not going for the weak Africans either. Their preferred targets were strong people that could first survive the long trek, and also fetch top dollars on the slave markets of America. That was how Africa was robbed from its strongest sons and daughters who were stolen to be sold in America, causing the Africa to fall behind. Now, coming back to the slaves provided by some African kings and dignitaries, it is worth noting that many of these slaves were also at the start actually kidnapped by slave merchants from other regions or villages to be sold. What this means is that people don’t sell their brothers or sisters or people from their community, but it was rather slave merchants that were roaming the continent kidnapping people from one area to be sold in another. However even though these so called slaves were treated somewhat harshly under the African kings, the situation was not just found in Africa around the time. If you research the history of Europe: France , England, Russia and many other parts of the world, the Arab world, Japan, China. India etc.., at one time or another, there has been an upper class that had the lower class in some kind of servitude. However that type of servitude was a far cry from the dehumanization and barbarism committed against the Africans sold into slave in America. As proof of that, we can point out that nowhere else in the world has the form of servitude or slavery performed locally, impacted its victims as severely as in America. The psychological social and familial devastations brought on by the treatment given to the Americans slaves are just on another level of evil. In Africa today, no community presents theses signs as a result of the servitude their ancestors were subject to. This is to say that the African kings who might have participated in the slave trade with the Europeans likely thought the slaves were going to be used in a form of servitude similar to what they had in their own kingdoms and probably had no idea of the hell the Americans were putting the slave through. It is useful to point out that I’m not excusing their participation in the trade. No one has the right to catch and sell another human being. However the facts are a little more nuanced than what most people believe Furthermore, during that period in Africa, it was not everyone who was in a position of owning slaves. To the contrary the big majority of the African population of that time was the pool within which people were kidnapped to be sold into slavery. My own grandfather whom I had a chance to discussed this topic with, in the 1970’s, told me that his own great-grandfather witness a bit of that period as a little boy, and had told him that in those days, our ancestral village was constantly under threat from slave merchants and their helpers who would hide near the edges of many villages and snatch people they could get their hands on. People therefore only went out in groups of many with armed men to avoid disappearing. If we consider that a king would rule over thousands of hundreds of thousands of people, only a small percentage of Africans today are in reality the descendants of these kings who participated in the slave trade, while 90% plus of the African people of today are more likely descendants of those who were either too quick to be caught, or too weak to be of any interest to the slave merchants, or very good at hiding so they never got caught This why is it very unfair to accuse all Africans of being descendants of people who sold their own brothers and sisters into slavery. The average African is likely to be a descendant of a victim, someone who was also running away or hiding from the slave merchants during that time. This narrative of the “American slaves were sold by their own into slavery”, is a pseudo history pushed by the people who exploited inhumanly the American slaves, and who later tried to clear their conscience by blaming Africans left on the continent for their misdeeds, since those left on the continent were not at the table went the slaves were finally freed. The aim is to create a wedge between African-Americans and their African brothers and sisters left in African. As a member of the black race we must be smart and not fall into the trap. Because while the white people use this argument to keep African Americans angry at Africans, they go behind them to make big money in Africa establishing mines to exploit the riches, gold , diamond, oil etc that are plentiful in Africa. As a black person born and living outside of Africa, you owe it to yourself to go visit and discover the real history of your people, and know who you really are, so you can get rid of the brain washing caricature of the black person created in America to fool us into feeling inferior.
