A friend of mine in the 1970s had a boomerang which used the same construction technique as these - essentially the same used for hockey sticks. He had bought it from a sports shop in Burton on Trent and had no experience of throwing boomerangs. I demonstrated how for him, and it flew in a perfect figure of eight, flying quite slowly and ending with a hovering fall and last leap to my feet. It was so good I have always wanted my own. I saw bakwoods and thought they must have made it, but when I wrote to them they said they had never made a boomerang of the shape I described, which was in a single semi-circular curve, not straight arms with a curved central part, like all the Bakwoods are. I have owned Bakwoods and none of the ones I have had had the flight characteristic I describe. I would love to know who made it and if any others exist.

Thanks for your interesting story, do you have any pictures of it, I may be able to identify it or know somebody that could ? Enthusiasts like myself also make boomerangs so it’s possible it could have been a ‘one off’ or not many of them made by that particular maker.

The best way to contact James is through messenger or Facebook, he makes all his booms to order and can help recommend a boom to you, he also has a Facebook group called boomerangs uk that I can recommend to join, lots of people that can help and give pointers on all manner of boomerang related enquiries from making, throwing ect. Tbh not many good makers out their nowadays as very little money to be made making them, I can recommend having a look on ‘theboomerangman’ website and you can also try looking up Victor Poulin his booms are easy to throw, all depends what you are looking for and how experienced you are at throwing them, James hoy booms are pretty extreme and take skill and knowledge to use them but I have also seen beginners throwing them successfully with a little guidance. Being in the Facebook group is a great help when looking to buy booms and get advice/recommendations.

Ah yes I’ve seen a couple of those, they are pretty rare tbh, you should be able to fix it with either epoxy or wick into it some thin ca while holding the crack closed with a clamp.

Hi Richard, thanks for looking and for your comments, you’re a true legend in the boomerang world ! All my boom vids if I’ve stated as original and not a reproduction have only been very carefully cleaned and polished to preserve them for future generations, so while some do look ‘new’ they are actually sporting the original paint finish.

This paint was either from cobra or plasti-koat then lacquered over with a two pack spray paint called ‘spray max’ the spray max is very expensive but well worth it for a solid scratch resistant finish.
