Right engine is newer seriesJ79. Left engine older version with shorter afterburner section. Older J79's smoked and howled nicely!

I really don't know unfortunately. I have seen other Amtrak engines with body damage, though. Makes you wonder how often these locomotives get taken in for repairs.
