Come to inner city New York (or go to Hollywood) whole another way of messing up with names. My daddy was a Mormon. I’m an Anne. My daughters are an Elizabeth and Charlotte. But if I lived in Utah or Idaho, in keeping with tradition, I should have named my girls Elyzabetj and Charlytte. … gotta have that “Y” action.

As a writer living just between SLC and Rexburg, I can testify to the creative spellings. It’s because of this that if I sign a book even for someone with a name that sounds as simple as Grace, I will always ask for the spelling. I cannot rule out the possibility of an I, Y, S, H, apostrophe, or the third letter capitalized. Or if it’s a name as distinctive as Phoebe, I can’t assume the parents didn’t put Feebie on the birth certificate. All jokes aside, it’s generally a good, culturally sensitive policy to not assume the spelling of someone’s name.
