I am a teacher myself, Asian but not Singaporean, I grew up myself using algebra, and I can't understand how the model is more superior that the traditional algebra method.

@@BBQsquirrel It's not superior, but students often struggle to write down the algebraic equations. So this is used as a intermediate step for students to learn how to interpret word problems. As they become more proficient with this and maybe other models, they are taught the abstract and more common algebraic notation.

@@BBQsquirrel you have to remember that in Singapore these are typical mathematical problems meant for 9-10 year olds who have not been taught algebra yet.
