Played this quite a lot as a kid. It was fun to experiment with different things, like putting different kind of critters on the trap door and then opening it. Never figured out how to finish the game, though. It's quite a "guide dang it" game.

My take is that they called it Final Bubble Bobble because it's the most expanded version of the original arcade game, keeping it very close to the arcade version but with a lot of additions building on top of it. The rest of the games are sequels and spin-offs. Nowadays it would have been called something like Bubble Bobble Definitive Edition or something in this vain :)
