For example, I also felt like I'd hit the ceiling when I was working in a space where my work reports felt less challenging , in comparison to my Master's coursework. As a result I immediately knew I needed a change of working environment.

Hie Siphokazi. I'm glad you found it insightful. Lecturing after PhD is a good plan, especially if you are passionate about teaching and/or providing research guidance to students. In the event that job offers don't come early enough we think it's okay to be mentally ready to make alternative career decisions. A good thing about being a PhD holder is that there'll always be an institution or person who would like to host you as a lecturer, but usually on a part-time and underpaid basis.
