It totally depends on what you want to do with the car! At a rainy event a stock STI with top rated rain tires is really competitive with almost anything. For autocross it depends on what group and class you want to compete in (I do that) because rules dictate which parts/mods you can use in a racing class. For track days or for street racing/drags it's a different parts list. For rally-cross, yet another totally different parts list. In any of these, you should get some seat time in the type of racing you want to try, or several types of racing, so you can figure out what floats your boat.
