Born and raised in Chicago. It is the best city for cleanliness and size. NY and LA are too big. Great selection of food and culture. Chicago today lacks good leadership which is bringing the image down.

Where are you getting these sources? I feel like the other major urban areas are all more expensive than chicago. Also, chicago has really gotten a bad rap, but if big city life isnt for you, you can live in a close-in suburb like evanston, skokie, oak park, cicero, berwyn, oak lawn or even elmhurst or somewhere else slightly further out. The close-in suburbs have their own kind of downtown area and they are very nice cities. Actually, almost all suburbs of chicago have good downtowns, and living in or around a downtown of a suburb like downers grove or mount prospect which are 20 miles out.

Sounds like Chicago should have a new slogan: “We’re Not The WORST!” Well other than property taxes. I grew up in Chicago. Now that I’ve spent time in places that aren’t Chicago , it’s obvious that Chicago is a nice city to visit but pretty bad to live in. The true warm weather in Chicago is July and August. The true horrible weather is November through March. The other months are questionable - it is highly likely that at least part of October and June will be cold and gloomy and very wet. It is almost guaranteed that the remaining months will vary from very cold to just cold and grey and depressing. The insane property taxes and other fees such as city stickers get you bombed out streets, shovel leaving city workers, a sub par public school system and laughable city services. Crime used to be mostly limited to the south and west sides. Not anymore. Since there is little police prescience -and I don’t blame the police because who wants to be a cop in an area where the mayor and government are against you-so now the criminals come into the more expensive neighborhoods too because why steal a 1995 Chevy when you can car jack a two year old BMW? Why rob a malt liquor store when you can bust through the window of a jewelry store knowing it will take the police 40 minutes to get there. Traffic is a joke. Two hours to go six miles during rush hour. As you said constant construction is a cause but so it a very poorly planned street system. I’m happy to visit friends and family in the summer. But to live there again? Nah. Anyone that’s spent time in other places know there are much much better options. Want to own business in Chicago ? Good luck. You’d better be resilient. And be prepared to pay. I will also add that while mayor Daley was a corrupt criminal, he did at least beautify the city. The previous and current mayor have really let this place start to look like crap outside of the downtown area but also a large part of that -businesses are leaving here in droves and you can see all of the empty storefronts. I still like Chicago. But no reason to live there.

I'm from Manhattan. Chicago's skyline looks better. NYC is massive but not pretty. Too many skylines. Lower Manhattan, Midtown, Long Island City, Jersey City. It's hard to get a good picture unless you're on a sky deck. New Yorkers are going to hate this comment. Chicago looks better especially driving north on Lakeshore drive.

Reason 1) the gangs are the most violent in the country. They will kill you in the street so you won’t really have any problems. I can’t believe you really said the Chicago public school district 😂 Reason 2) the migrants will do your landscaping cheaper than typical illegals. Reason 3) it’s now worse than St. Louis and Detroit.

Where/what has the best harmony as far as cost-effectiveness/affordability, strategic location that is equidistant to most places in the city, as well as safety? Some of this can be relative, but I really think Pilsen, Bridgeport & Mckinley park are strategic - you can go to downtown, the northside, and far southside, as well as a quick exit out of the city heading west. They are reasonably safe but border some shady areas in Little Village, Back of the Yards & Armor Square. The city neighborhood borders almost always resemble suburbs, so they are the least geographically strategic, but places like the northwest side are usually safer. Where do you recommend a blue-collar single man to rent or buy? I know the city rather well & can't seem to afford anything. The interest rates are high even if you have a good credit score and history.

... The truth is, it depends on your background (upbringing, ethnicity, personality, economic status, etc.) Although Chicago is arguably the greatest city in America, folks need to understand it is probably the most segregated city in America. I have lived all over the world (including "The South"), but I have never seen anything like city. Literally, there are only a hand full of diverse neighborhoods. I would recommend doing way more research than simply listening to youtubers. The best way to select a neighborhoods in Chicago, is to experience the environment for yourself e.g., walk the streets, observe, interact with the community.

Are these just the whiter and wealthier neighborhoods? Hyde Park is ranked 19th of the 40 coolest neighborhoods in the WORLD by Timeout Magazine (2023). Not to mention the crime in River North has skyrocketed in the last couple of years and the West Loop is priced way out of most people’s budget. This seems rather biased for some reason or another. So either your real estate business doesn’t cover Hyde Park or maybe Pilsen, (also cool) or they’re too “diverse” for your KZbin channel.
