There is a new boiler technology! New technology reduces fuel consumption by half, and there is no smoke at all. Emissions of harmful substances are reduced by 400 times.

the ss united states boilers and engines were surveyed in 2003 they were found to be in excellent condition, the propeller shafts still have fresh oil in the bearings. the funnels are sealed off with louvers at the top. its like a car thats been properly pickled per se,

Sassy! Obviously a good mic you have, as mine simply couldn’t cope with 1431 on photo runs, distortion occurred once the loco was 50m away! Lookin forward to her coming south of the strait.

@SteamIncorporated Thanks for the insight and information. The liner SS United States on its maiden voyage in 1952 set a world speed record. To date, though idle setting in Philadelphia for many years, she still holds the record and did it on steam power. If she was to ever run again there aren't many engineers these days who are savvy with steam and boilers. Happy to see you keeping this best, old and time tested technology alive.

Hi, I'm a naval architect and just comparing to the boilers on a steamship. Question: What your doing with that air powered tool is expanding the ends of each boiler tube? Will doing that make it water tight? When rebuilding a locomotive and you do a hydro test, is the outer part of the riveted body/tank generally sound or can they suffer metal/age fatigue? A steamship's boilers are inspected annually by a certified expert. To operate a steam locomotive are the requirements the same? Thanks

Good to see this old Clyde built DA given another lease of life. They did great service hauling the express trains on the NIMT when they superseeded the steam loco's. First NZR loco with the 26c brake valves too. Big improvement.
