At the start is Arrowsmiths who were in Blandford St. I was friends with Al Fletcher who's aunt I think owned the store. He worked there, we were drinking buddies back in the day many moons ago!

My paternal grandad was from Sunderland, he was born in 1879, I never met him but it's nice to think he may have had one of these pubs as his local. He may have been in one of the photos, who knows?

Thank you. My grandmother lived with her parents in Fulwell in 1911 and did not move too far when she married in 1916. Lovely to see these photos.

That looks very much like Bishopwearmouth cemetery between Chester and Hylton Roads as Sunderland cemetery is in Grangetown. As a former 'employee' of Thos. Downey Undertakers I know my cemeteries in Sunderland.

Oh dear, what happened to my Sunderland in County Durham? The biggest ship-building town in the world, The electric lightbulb (Joseph Swan NOT Thomas Eddison) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Swan, The first successful hand grenade by William Mills (the Mills Bomb) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mills_bomb, The longest single span railway bridge in the world at the time (Monkwearmouth Railway Bridge - Thomas Elliot Harrison - lived in Whitburn) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Elliot_Harrison, The most successful of the pre-grouping railways, the NER (Thomas Elliot Harrison), And many other great innovations. The Town Planners should be hung drawn and quartered for what they did to my home town by allowing the demolition of a magnifcent heritage and turning it into a crock from t he 1960s onwards! TRAGIC.

To go to the town then was an adventure, trips to the Arcade, Josephs, Blacketts and Joplings. Me and my mates would get the bus from Hylton Castle,1d, and knock around the town all day. These days I'm glad to get out of it, such a shame. Great video, thanks.

Marsden Grotto, Cleadon Village and Whitburn aren't part of Fulwell and Cleadon isn't even in the Sunderland borough. It's part of South Tyneside. Good apart from those oversights though.

I was born in Sunderland, I always thought it depressing even as a kid, the dull building's, the cutting cold, even the snow dried up into little clumps of dirty ice , it all is just depressing. The pathetic shops, the weak panic stricken people , the for-ever worried look on tired womens faces, negative men blaming everyone for the lack of employment. Awful place , awful. Never visit this place unless you really feel like suicide, I left over 45 years ago, been back the odd time , nothing has changed, still the same dull negative place.

Fantastic upload , shame it's all gone now all those small to medium size family owned run stores which had real character and diversity replaced with a few big samey chain stores these days and endless charity shops /bookies/kebab and pizza and burger shops and the like ...we really have lost something on the high street in todays world ..pity

brilliant. I bet and promise people were more happier then ,when you think we now have no industry's or every kind of job of employment you can think of and name .and these extra political correctness health+ safety, etc etc ,, why man people these days couldn't cope with living ,scrimping and surviving in those days, now big brother is everywhere ''even your own neighbour

can you name the song and singer for me please, i have fond memories of this place having had a relationship with a beautiful but unattainable lady who lived not far away from here, i never saw it illuminated or any events that i know go on here, and it was nice to see the bandstand in its heyday with its audience
