The lead singer does a great job fitting so many words into the song in short bursts. That has to be tough.

My father had the honor of seeing them live in the 60's. Said they were just as great live as on their records. I had the privilege of discovering how great they were by way of their 45's and some LP's. A great group of musicians who performed some amazing songs in an amazing way. Their songs still amaze me even today.

This played on the radio when I was 12, and it felt like sunlight breaking through the clouds of "Chantilly Lace" and "Counting Flowers on the Wall" - it was the sound of the Future, the New Generation - I never saw this on TV - thank you so much for catching me up. And I'm super impressed with their daring Kraftwerk-prescient intro, and the genuine musical talent and polish displayed in a live performance. This was the soundtrack of an un-repeatable era. Thanks again.

A memory I shall never lose: There I was, toiling away at the age of 17 at the Wherehouse Music (and no, not Warehouse but Wherehouse Music, successor to Blockbuster Music, or the Whorehouse as I affectionately called it) store at which I worked in 1999 when this dude came in looking for some assistance. Naturally he approached my coworker first as she was a much better looking designed humanoid than I, but when I heard his inquiry for The Association--of which she knew not--I stepped in to help this fella. When I directed him to our stocked section for the group, pulling the precise album for which he was looking, we began shooting bull specifically of how I came to know of The Association as I was but a teenager in the late 1990s. After explaining my devout love of all shapes and sizes of music and that music is all about chasing the impossibility of the perfect song, the perfect score, the perfect composition, dude exclaimed to me his testimony of how he believed without a doubt The Association were the greatest musical anything to have ever transpired--that there was everything pre-Association, and everything that came after, with those few precious years of actively recording before they became just another cog on the Oldies Circuit. Now this isn't to discredit the group in any way whatsoever, but the greatest of the greatest in all of music history?!? Gonna have to kindly disagree, which I did, and which of course did not go well. Tourists, am I right?!? This song will forever remind me of that interaction, as it was this very number he claimed was THE greatest written and/or recorded song in the annals of music.

Also if ya dig this song Along comes Mary on youtube you may enjoy Where Roses Grow Live by Rez Band. I remember hearing the song by Led Zepp " In My Time of Dyin " during my drug years and made me think about death and Jesus. Then a hippy friend that dug Jesus told me more of Jesus love and forgiveness and how I could also know Jesus love. So in 1981 I cried out to Jesus and wow man He came into my life and I had and have so much joy and peace and now know that through Jesus when I die I will be with Him in Heaven. Hey Jesus loves each of you also and yall can know Him if you are at all open. Just cry out to Him and also read the Gospel of John in the Bible or check out the movie on KZbin. 😀

I saw them live in Glendale California. The record had just broken, and my sisters and I went. They did the same introduction (bizarre we thought at the time), and the same great harmonies live. Incredible musicianship, incredible energy packed into their vibe. They were a mystery to us all. But grab a '66 Chevelle and roll on at night with the windows down and this song playing. Unforgettable.

Saw the Associations, what was left of them with only one original band member back in 2001 at a yearly event called On the Waterfront and the group sang this song as well as Cherish.

This is a cool song. I admire their work. Yet I wish the Association might have leaned more toward this sound. Its got a nice edge to a cool sound.

Lyrics to: "Along Comes Mary" Every time I think that I'm the only one who's lonely Someone calls on me And every now and then I spend my time in rhyme and verse And curse those faults in me And then along comes Mary And does she want to give me kicks , and be my steady chick And give me pick of memories Or maybe rather gather tales of all the fails and tribulations No one ever sees When we met I was sure out to lunch Now my empty cup tastes as sweet as the punch When vague desire is the fire in the eyes of chicks Whose sickness is the games they play And when the masquerade is played and neighbor folks make jokes As who is most to blame today And then along comes Mary And does she want to set them free, and let them see reality From where she got her name And will they struggle much when told that such a tender touch as hers Will make them not the same When we met I was sure out to lunch Now my empty cup tastes as sweet as the punch And when the morning of the warning's passed, the gassed And flaccid kids are flung across the stars The psychodramas and the traumas gone The songs are left unsung and hung upon the scars And then along comes Mary And does she want to see the stains, the dead remains of all the pains She left the night before Or will their waking eyes reflect the lies, and make them Realize their urgent cry for sight no more When we met I was sure out to lunch Now my empty cup tastes as sweet as the punch
